(SOLVED) libreoffice calc formula or value in cell

Post by LMF »

I'm trying to set up a personal checkbook register using libreoffice calc.

I use the formula bar to create a formula for the balance, in the calculated cell, the formula always appears rather than the calculated value.

Is there some option or setting to make the value show up?

Thank you.

I don't know if anyone will see this, since I should have put it in a new topic, but I can't find "New Topic".

FAQ indicates one should click "New Topic", so where is it located?

Strange, that is not my experience.
Indeed I just finished creating a sheet this morning where the Formula for cell I3 is =(F3/G3)*60 .
Cell I3 actually shows 8.5 .
Agreed that while I am typing the Formula it is what appears in the cell, but once I hit the Accept Icon (Back Arrow) the calculation appears.

Right click the relevant cells and format them appropriately.

Thank you, t42. The view setting "Show Formula" was checked. When I unchecked it, the cells had the values instead of formulas.

This also alerted me to keep an eye on the various settings.

Also, thanks to others who responded. I may check the kmymoney suggested by chiefjim.

More problems with LibreOffice Calc: Instead of a value, I now get "#VALUE!" and the message at the bottom is "Error:Wrong data type". I notice that the "Sum" in the function bar at top becomes a red X when I enter a formula.

I must be missing something obvious, but I don't seem to be able to get this right.

Thanks, Lyle

It is probably as simple as having a cell not formatted as a number.
Sum cannot then add it together with the others.
The easiest solution is to highlight the row or column that you are summing & the re-format it as number.
Sometimes a cell has a numeric entry but it is preceded with a ' this indicated that it is, infact a character.
Clear the cell, reformat the cell as numeric & then enter the number again.

If you have a column of numbers then a quick way to check is in the next column enter
isnumber(xx)
where xx is the cell reference of the cell with a number in it.
Then fill the function down the column.
Anything that Calc sees as NOT a number will contain a 0 in the function cell, a 1 indicated that it is numeric..

In addition to RIH's suggestion, check if any of the terms in the SUM are links to other sheets. Sometimes if the link is slow to update it can cause a formula to wrongly yield VALUE.

Thanks for the help. I think I have it working now.

I need to ask one more question: I know I am supposed to start a new topic, but I never can find the magic "New Topic" button.

FAQ indicates I should choose the "New Topic" option, but where is it?

Thanks, again,
Lyle

Click on Board Index - the one with the House Icon.
Select the area of the Board where your post will make most sense - for example Beginners Questions - & open that section of the Forum.
New Topic then becomes clear..

Good. Now you can mark the topic as solved.

What was the solution?

Thank you, RIH, for pointing me to the "New Topic" button. Maybe I should write it down. (Then I would probably forget where I put the note!)
