How do I install Youtubedl-gui safely?
I installed Freetube for the purpose of downloading Youtube videos only to find it downloads videos without the audio included. So Freetube is not the right tool for Youtube downloading.
What is the best Linux Mint user friendly app for downloading YouTube videos (with audio included) and Youtube playlists?
In the Software Manager I found an app called Youtubedl-gui. However, the problem is it is available only as a flatpak and the file size is huge at 778 MB.
So I went to the Youtubedl-gui Ubuntu download site at the link below and my browser warns me it is not a safe download:
https://mrs0m30n3.github.io/youtube-dl-gui/#downloads
Does anybody out there know how to install the Youtubedl-gui app safely using a terminal command so it does not install as a flatpak? Any opinion welcome.

You don't need the gui, just download youtube-dl, and it runs from the terminal. Or, there is also a fork of that called yt-dlp which I use. If you want to try either one, don't download it from the repos. The repos version is woefully out of date and downloads will fail on a certain site. You can download either one (links below) straight from their respective sites, using either the wget or curl method in the terminal.

To install
youtube-dlg
, download the .deb file that matches your installation from here, linked from your URL:
Code: Select all
http://ppa.launchpad.net/nilarimogard/webupd8/ubuntu/pool/main/y/youtube-dlg/
sudo dpkg -i filename.deb
FWIW, I use yt-dlp, very similar to youtube-dl, in a terminal; I tried the -dlg program a while back and it seemed pointlessly complicated
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

Re: How do I install Youtubedl-gui safely?
Thank you to all for your posts. I installed yt-dlp and did a test download. I am perplexed it downloaded the video in a MKV format. Is it possible for yt-dlp to download the video as a MP4 file format? Better yet, can anybody please post a link that shows a list of all the basic commands one needs to know in order to operate yt-dlp. I need to see example terminal commands for the operations listed below:
1. Command to download video in MP4 format.
2. Command to extract audio from video in FLAC format and then download it.
3. Download using a list of 20 URL YT video links contained in control TEXT file located in my Documents Folder.
4. Or alternatively download a CUE of Youtube video links separated by a delimiter such as commas or hyphens.
Can yt-dlp perform such operations straight from within the terminal? If yes, I would have to say it is the best Youtube video downloader I have ever been referred to.
Any opinions welcome.

Use this to see a list of available download options (note the upper case "F"):
You'll then get a list like this:
Let's say you want the best available, which is the last on the list. You will then run this command in the terminal (note the lower case "f"):
If you only wanted to download the audio, in m4a format, you would change the "22" to either 140 or 141.
yt-dlp -F https://www.anywebsite.com/
You'll then get a list like this:
Code: Select all

Re: How do I install Youtubedl-gui safely?
If you don't mind getting a little dirty with the command line, here's a site I go to if I'm using LM and want to install the program you want:
https://www.how2shout.com/linux/how-to- ... 20-04-lts/
Since LM 20.3 is based on Ubuntu 20.04, this can still work. HTH

Re: How do I install Youtubedl-gui safely?
LOL, I suppose YTDL-GUI can be used for that. But, I've worked for companies that put up their meetings and such on their private feeds an want us to download them after we've been given their links. They do this for training purposes. It was mentioned above that the person wanted to install YoutubeDL-Gui safely. I found that this still works for me on distros that are using the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS as their base, and you can actually install it from the AUR in Arch based as well. I've tried to install it on the newer Ubuntu's since 20.04, and I get error messages. (I think it's a Python thing) So if/when LM heads the way of 22.04, it'll be interesting to see if YTDL-GUI will still work at all.
Re: How do I install Youtubedl-gui safely?
The file was downloaded as a *.mkv because that was the format on youtube. You can convert it easily from the command line. ffmpeg should be installed.
ffmpeg -i /path/to/file/nameoffile.mkv -codec copy nameoffile.mp4
If you have a directory with a bunch of .mkv music video files you can do them all at once and convert to mp3 or wav using libmp3lame. CD to the directory containing the files to be converted and:
find . -type f -name "*.mkv" -exec bash -c 'FILE="$1"; ffmpeg -i "${FILE}" -vn -c:a libmp3lame -y "${FILE%.mkv}.mp3";' _ '{}' \;
If you must have a gui, Audacity will change the file directly via its 'Export' function
