Transmission, is it still actively supported?

Post by ne0h »

reading on their site, I see that it really hasn't been updated in a long time, on all platforms. Unlike, for example, qbittorrent which just received a new version on January 6, 2022. Transmission hasn't received updates for I don't know how long. Does anyone use it or prefer other clients?
thank you

I so much prefer the simplicity and clear, clean presentation of Transmission, that it's the only client I want to use. All the others just look too cluttered to me. I don't care when it was last updated as long as it still works well.

While new public releases may take time, it doesn't mean that there's not any ongoing development happening. :)

Nothing against Transmission, but I use Deluge.

I used Deluge for quite a while, but lately have been using qBittorent...Once I sussed the interface and its settings, it works great.

Been using Transmission for a few weeks, no issues.

One thing I would suggest, create a partition as a 50G partition as /. Partition the rest as /Home. IF the system fails, reinstall and use the exact same username and all your 'stuff' comes back to you.

It's still in the Mint/Ubuntu standard repos, that's supported enough for me.

If I didn't use transmission I'd use deluge, but I don't need its extra features and transmission works fine.

Hi ne0h,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

I also like Transmission torrent client for its simplicity. It does appear to be updated even over the past week. The Mint Ubuntu Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) still shows v2.94 and they have a version 3 out. In order to get the most current version, you would have to install it using their PPA or compile it from outside of the Mint Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM). Unless there is something you need in the newest version, then there is no need to install v3.

qbittorrent and deluge are also very good torrent clients. I use Tixati, but its interface is a little more busy (complex) to some people because of all the features.

You can have more than one torrent client installed and try them to see which one you like the best and works well for whatever you want to do. Then, after you decide which one(s) you like, remove the ones you don't like.

Tip: For those people using a VPN for secure and anonymous connections, it is recommended to change the Torrent client's network adapter's interface setting to use the vpn tunnel usually something like "tun0" which only appears when connected to a VPN server. This ensures that your torrent activity is using the VPN for a secure and anonymous connection. I could not find this setting in the Transmission client v2.94 or v3.0 which I just compiled and installed.

Hi Phd,
Thanks for the reply!!
Wow, I used Tixati years ago. even on windows. an excellent software, advanced, which perhaps reminds a little of Azureus. I think I'll try it again !!
ps. qbittorent is also a great client, with some more transmission functions, but in QT. I did not know that there was a PPA for transmission! Thank you
