brand new computer that doesn't always work
Okay, so I got this brand new laptop for Christmas. It's nice. it's an HP 15.6 FHD with i7 processor. 8 g of RAM, 512 gb ssd. it would be perfect if only it would keep doing what it's supposed to do. It gets online, stays for a couple minutes and then suddenly disconnects.
And then there is the unreliable interface. When I am logging on, I try to enter the password, but it doesn't type. When that happens, which is every time I use it, I have to sometimes hit the login button. That doesn't work every time. Sometimes I have to use the cancel button. That doesn't work every time either. I don't see any pattern here to why this is happening. When I finally do get on. in whatever way it worked this time, then I try to get open up my web browser, and a passcode thing pops up, I never was really sure why. It doesn't bother me when it functions, but of course, it doesn't always. i will try to enter a password and it will do the same thing the login screen did. one thing I noticed is that once I answer the question of whether I want to resume the previous session, whether it's yes or no, the password form will come up on a different part of the page and this time it will work.
Sometimes it won't fill in the web address on the browser, sometimes it will.
And then there's my mouse. it will function very well for a few minutes, and just suddenly, with no reason that I am aware of, it will stop working. the mouse won't move it, But neither will the touchpad. That's why I think it's a software problem.
I have my laptop hooked up to a hotspot from my phone. So far it's doing what I need it to do. (Until it doesn't? I don't know.}
So bottom line, I have a connection which stays connected until it doesn't, a keyboard which types wonderfully, until it doesn't, and a mouse, which also works until it doesn't. If I reboot the system, I get my interface back, most of the time. Sometimes it doesn't work. No pattern as far as I can tell.
By the way, I was disconnected from this website, even with my hotspot supposedly working, and had to reboot just to get this posted.
I really need a computer that does what it's supposed to do every time I want it to do it. This is getting real old real fast. Can somebody help me?

Re: brand new computer that doesn't always work
I had similar problems with a new laptop. until I tried Cinnamon Edge edition found here > https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=296
You might want to give it a try, it has a newer kernel and is tailored for newer machines.

I have always used MATE. Is there a MATE Edge edition?
Re: brand new computer that doesn't always work
No, there isn't. You could see if there is a newer kernel available in the Update Manager (in the View menu, open Linux Kernels).
Some system information would probably allow people to help you better. This can be found in the system reports application, on the tab system information. You can copy it from there and paste it into your next post.

Re: brand new computer that doesn't always work
If you can install Cinnamon Edge, you can switch desktop to MATE by just installing it and switch to it in the Login Manager.

Re: brand new computer that doesn't always work
Okay, I just installed Cinnamon Edge. i downloaded my favorite browser and tried to set up my panels. and lost my connection. Again. Just like I did with my old desktop. I don't know if that was a one-off or if it's a harbinger of more to come.
Anyway here's a new copy of my system information:
I will be back to say either it worked or I need more help. I'm not sure which right now.

Re: brand new computer that doesn't always work
Okay, I'm back. Still having problems with a sporadic connection and my interface quit working so I had to reboot to get things to work again. I still have a hard time with sign-ins like I did before. I started my browser a while ago and it had the sign thing. I tried to put my password in, but it wouldn't go. I had to push the "authorize" button and get it to reload in order to make it work.
So, why is it still acting up even after I changed over to Edge?

Re: brand new computer that doesn't always work
The only difference between the Edge ISO and the regular ISO is the kernel version. You already had the 5.13 kernel installed on your MATE install, so there was no reason to install the Edge ISO which has the 5.13 kernel unless you wanted to try Cinnamon.
Please try the 5.14-oem kernel. That seems to be working out better for many people with HP laptops. Install the latest 5.14-oem kernel with
sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d
and reboot.A woman typing on a laptop with LM20.3 Cinnamon.

Re: brand new computer that doesn't always work
What is the part number of that HP laptop? I am thinking it is either not detecting the wireless adapter correctly.
Closest P/N to your description, WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY Realtek RTL8822CE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2x2) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 5 combo
or you have a laptop with a bad network adapter and need to return it. It looks like the detected adapter is Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11ac.
That's all I have.

Re: brand new computer that doesn't always work
383k8ua#aba is the part number.
I just updated the kernel to 5.14. So far, it seems to be working. I guess we probably won't know for a fact until it just doesn't lose the connection anymore. It was every few minutes before. We will see what that turns out to be now.
also when in the process, I found a little icon on the bottom right corner of the screen that had a "1" in it. I clicked it and discovered it was a notification about my system. It said that my realtek was not connected, and I had click a button that said to connect it. Which is dumb. I can understand that under certain circumstances, maybe you wouldn't want the network card connected, but why was it disconnected by default???
Anyway. I may have solved the problem finally. I guess I'll be back to either confirm or deny. Thanks.
