LM 20.3 Una Xfce, Thunar crashing, again

Post by APSchmidt »

Hello!

I had troubles with Thunar under 20.2 so I thought that, maybe, the problems would be fixed in 20.3, alas! no...

Thunar keeps crashing randomly when I navigate from one folder to the other, or use a shortcut to an external drive and I don't mention navigating my phone contents!. Hard to describe since this nasty behaviour seems to be completely erratic. Below is what I just got in the crash journals, what do Ido with it?

Thank you for your advice.

Re: LM 20.3 Una, Thunar crashing, again

Post by Night Wing »

I also use Xfce.

I have "never" had Thunar crash on me. I use it quite frequently and like you I go from folder to folder in Thunar.

I started with Xfce in Mint 14.This includes both 20.2 and now with (20.3). In my opinion, the problem is not with Thunar in Xfce. It is something else on your computer which is causing the problem with Thunar. But I use a desktop tower computer and not a laptop.

My wife uses an HP laptop computer and she also started with Mint 14 with the Xfce desktop environmemt. She has never had a problem with Thunar in Xfce either and like me she also used 20.2 and now with (20.3).

How could it be? I didn't mention it but it's a fresh install of 20.3 (installed two days ago).

Thanks for your contribution though. :)

I sure as hell have, and I've been using it since ubuntu 12.04/mint 13.

I sure as hell have, and I've been using it since ubuntu 12.04/mint 13.
And I've been using Mint, starting with Mint 14 since January of 2013 (or there abouts) on "four" different models of computers (2 desktop towers, 2 laptops) with Xfce and Thunar has never crashed. And since my two desktop tower computers have more than one hard drive installed in them, this gives me a total of seven hard drives running Mint with Xfce and Thunar. Those seven hard drives are also from different manufacturers (Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, etc).

Which means, I started with Mint 14 Xfce, then went to Mint 16, then to Mint 17, 17.1, 17.2, 17.3, 18, 18.1, 18.2, 18.3, 19, 19.1, 19.2, 19.3, 20, 20.1, 20.2 and now with (20.3). No problems with Thunar "ever". As you can see from my past versions, this isn't my first rodeo with Xfce (and Thunar) in Mint.

So if you (and the original poster) have a problem with Thunar crashing, then you need to find out why your Thunar crashes while other people using Thunar, (like me), do not have a problem with Thunar.

BTW, all of my Mint versions, they "all" have been "clean installs" on all seven hard drives.

Well, this is precisely why I posted the crash report in my first post, so that people who are knowledgeable can tell me what it is all about.

Sadly, core dumps are rarely useful except to the code guru that wrote the program or identifying cpu or memory problems. It might be better to take a different approach. For instance, it would be useful to see if any hardware problems were reported in the system log; /var/log/syslog. You may need to have sudo privilege to read it;

Code: Select all

# sudo cat /var/log/syslog|grep -i error
Thunar is all about storage. It might be helpful to look at your arrangement of storage media. If you are using external media, you might want to partition the problem by temporarily disconnecting them and see if the problem goes away. How are your media partitioned and which filesystem are they using (ext2-4, btrfs, etc)? Also are you using LVM? Are you using encryption? What size is your memory and do you have a swap file?
This might be just a start. Mysterious problems can sometimes take a while to sort out so be patient, do the basics first and see you spot something. I have had a glitchy mouse cause programs to hang or crash by sending a bunch of rapid clicks.

Best regards,
Bob G.

Thanks for your input. I have used the command above and I'm getting this:

Nothing older than today and I have no idea what these errors mean... :(

Anyway, since the day I started this thread I modified one or two things. Thunar started on login, I removed that, I also removed the shortcuts I used, I added the folders these shortcuts opened to the side panel of Thunar and I haven't had any crashes yet. Finger crossed!.. :D My impressiion is that Thunar doesn't like shortcuts.

Oh, and in the system report window, I clicked on the bug report button and all I get is a "404 error" message: https://github.com/linuxmint/thunar/issues ...

Re: LM 20.3 Una Xfce, Thunar crashing, again

Post by APSchmidt »

I'm still having this problem. I cannot browse my phone contents without Thunar crashing again and again. I sometimes need to replug it several times before I managed and get to the folder I need to get to.

We cannot tag anyone here can we? When I click on the link to the bug reports on the right in the Mint report app, whatever it's called in English, I get this page: https://github.com/linuxmint/thunar/issues.

I wish this problem was fixed before I install "Vanessa".

Here is the latest crash report:

We cannot tag anyone here can we? When I click on the link to the bug reports on the right in the Mint report app, whatever it's called in English, I get this page: https://github.com/linuxmint/thunar/issues.
That is a dead link. I do not have Xfce so I do not know to what you are referring, but the Linux Mint team does not maintain the Xfce desktop and its apps.

Here is the link for Xfce Github. I do not know if the issue you are describing might be a Thunar Plugin Issue or if it might fall under the general Xfce Issues.
