Mint 20.3 VLC sound only, no video

Post by lovecraft1024 »

Hi,

I upgraded from Mint 19.2 to 20.3 a few days ago and now VLC will not play videos. That is to say, I only get sound from media files that played perfectly well as sound+video with my previous installation.

It seems like it's "trying" to play the video, because the VLC window resizes to the expected size of the video, but the window remains black, or has some remnant of part of the screen that was there before (does not refresh).

This doesn't happen in Celluloid or in Firefox playing Youtube videos, so I guess it's specifically a VLC problem. I'd appreciate any help to debug this.

System: freshly-installed Mint 20.3 with updates, Gigabyte Radeon RX 460 video card, Intel Core i5-8600K CPU @ 3.60GHz...

Thanks,

Charles

Hi,

Try the flatpak version of VLC:

Code: Select all

flatpak install org.videolan.VLC
Regards,

Well, that fixed it - I don't know why, but it did. Thank you.

Got an account just to say *THANKS*. Nothing else I tried worked. :D

Note: apt remove VLC before installing via flatpak.
