if you have an error after xed admin:///etc/stubby/stubby.yaml there is an error corrected further in the post.
you should run xed admin:///etc/stubby/stubby.yml

Most youtube Linux videos are awful incompetent rubbish and I don\'t have the patience to try and find good ones. Search engines are better.

Just follow the instructions for adding the ppa for firefox esr in the 1st answer here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1366427 ... untu-20-04

That's how I installed mine in Mint. askubuntu.com is reliable for Mint because Mint is Ubuntu based, though you need to know the ubuntu version your mint is based upon. Actually I've gotten 90% of my useful Mint support info from there or ubuntuforums.org.

IMO firefox-esr is so much better than regular FF it's just ridiculous. I don';t think you'll regret installing it.

I think you may have misunderstood the post. OP posted their youtube video of what errors they got when they followed the tutorial posted on this forum (by Kadaitcha Man) for installing Firefox ESR.

Hello, f23948.

I have applied 2 corrections to Kadaitcha Man's tutorial, after having watched your problem video.
karlchen wrote:Last edited by karlchen on 27 Apr 2022 16:49, edited 7 times in total.
Reason: corrected commandline to read "xed admin:///etc/stubby/stubby.yml" (cf. post further down) and swapped order of "apt update" and "apt install" - always update first and install second
Please, try following the tutorial again.

Regards,
Karl

I disagree,
I have FF ESR also, but it does not know anything about my bookmarks, favourite settings, etc.
gave up on it, and staying with MINT FF

After i typed:

Then it shows:

Hello, f23948.

Compayring your stubby output to kadaitcha man's tutorial: yours should be ok.

About esni:

Seems as if you did not do the next step right below kadaitcha man's stubby output:

Enable DNS over HTTPS and Cloudflare, which is the default that should be selected.

Why do you need SNI so much, is DoH is not enough?
As I comment at the time at that tutorial:
Re: TUTORIAL: Why you should use Firefox ESR
Post by t42 » 09 Mar 2021 20:19
... Only about 6 per cent websites support ESNI. linuxmint.com does not support ESNI, forums.linuxmint.com does not support ESNI, I found only a pair of websites I frequent which support it. Of course ESNI here is a feature working only on the application level...
And indeed ESNI option was removed from Firefox in favor of ESH at some point in 85.x version. So the main reason of creating K.M.'s tutorial - to get support ESNI still existing in ESR 78.x and removed later in ESR 91.x

Also, as we commented at the time on the scope of the tutorial, modification of the Firefox browser settings is enough to implement DoH mode:
Settings --> General --> Network Settings --> Enable DNS over HTTPS. And, again, K.M. failed to clarify that in his tutorial he described two independent things - setting network DOT mode on the OS level and opening a browser session in DOH mode.

Edit:
For someone who still want to experiment with ESNI. Download previous Firefox ESR from here /pub/firefox/releases/78.9.0esr/linux-x86_64/en-US/
Extract it somewhere, change inside extracted directory and run ./firefox -p, create new profile. You will see network.security.esni.enabled in about:config But beware aggressive self-update to ESR 91.x from "about Firefox" page.

This seems to suggest strongly that it may be a good idea to add a moderator note/warning to Kadaitcha Man's tutorial warning users that following the tutorial is a waste of time, because ESNI is no longer supported in Firefox91.x.

Gives me an idea why user f23948 may be out of luck trying to follow the same tutorial as well.

Cheers,
Karl

Hello, f23948.

Please, see my post above, where the most important statement made by user t42 has been quoted.
Firefox ESR version 91.x no longer supports ESNI. As a consequence, there is no chance of following Kadaitcha Man's tutorial.
Sorry. Wasted time.

Cheers,
Karl

Download latest Firefox ESR using this link:

Code: Select all

https://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-esr-latest&os=linux64&lang=en-US
[2]
Open terminal in the download directory and extract archive:

Code: Select all

sudo tar -xvjf firefox-91.9.0esr.tar.bz2 -C /opt
[3]
Link the new Firefox ESR

Code: Select all

sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox-esr
[4]
Create a shortcut:
Right-click on the Desktop and choose Create a new launcher here...
In the Launcher Properties in the Command enter
/usr/bin/firefox-esr -p
In the name field write Firefox ESR
Press OK to "Would you like to add this launcher to the menu also?" prompt
This will create a copy of Firefox ESR alongside your current Firefox browser.

Option -p in the command field allows to create separate new profile for FIrefox ESR and prevent corruption of the previous profile.

For what I know, SNI is the only thing that makes our ISP able to know the websites we browse, even when we use HTTPS and a local DNS server
