Installing Wine in Mint 19.3 (Solved).
I have followed these instructions to install Wine: https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu
However, it did not work.
Can someone point out what I have done wrong please?
Jim.

Re: Installing Wine in Mint 19.3
Well first. Step 5 in " how to get help' link would be stellar where it says " before you post please read" surrounded by a pink background with pink letter font before that link. We have no idea what you're running "under the hood" of that PC you're dealing with
run inxi -Fxxxrz from terminal window. copy the results of that command. Come back here, left click on that </> button hit that space bar twice to give yourself some pasting..room( fifth from the left above the white message window), past the results of that command between the (quote) (quote)
It makes it much easier for us to read that info without it taking up massive room on this webpage and helps often to narrow down the problem and save on speculation.
So when you get ready to launch any microsoft windows native program that would normally require WINE to work, when you right click on that .exe file...do you see the open to open with " Wine Windows Program Loader" ? Or not?
If not...my first guess would actually be either you did something wrong in following those winehq.org's instructions for your LM 19.3 installation. Beyond that, I and probably others here need more details. I've never had a problem getting wine to run regardless of the Linux Mint version for the past around 11 years from winehq.org's instructions per the version of Mint I was dealing with.
Let's double check some things together.
You're on mint 19.3 so it would end up making sense to choose the part for Ubuntu Bionic aka 18.04 based option: terminal commands would be .....
1. sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
2. wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
3. sudo mv winehq.key /usr/share/keyrings/winehq-archive.key
4. wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubunt ... ic.sources
5. sudo mv winehq-bionic.sources /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
6. sudo apt update
7. sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable ( for stable) and/or sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-staging -y
(((( the -y part just is the same as pressing enter when prompted " are you sure you want to install this?" deal done automatically ))))
I've had a problem only one time following these steps to get the option to launch a .exe with " Windows Wine Program Loader" and it was something I accidentally goofed on majority and had to reinstall LM. Otherwise, I've always been able to get Wine up and going this way. Tried Software Manager in any of the LM versions, it's never worked right or at all for me. (shrugs)

Ok, I now consider myself to be suitably rebuked!.........(So it seems!).
Not unusual for me............apologies for my ignorance.

Re: Installing Wine in Mint 19.3 (Abandoned).
Hello, Wompoo.
The relevant question is whether the Windows software, which you want to run under Wine, will require the newer Wine version or not.
In case you decide to give wine-installer a try now, after having tried WineHQ already, in this case you will have to uninstall any installed Wine packages beforehand and you will have to disable the WineHQ repository from your software sources beforehand. Only afterwards, you can install and use wine-installer.
Regards,
Karl
Why did you not follow the instruction given in the Linux Mint 19.3 release notes, using wine-installer, instead?Wompoo wrote: ⤴Sat May 21, 2022 9:41 pmI have followed these instructions to install Wine: https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu
However, it did not work. Can someone point out what I have done wrong please? Jim.
Admittedly, wine-installer will give you an older Wine version than the one downloaded from WineHQ.Wine 4.0 wrote:To install the stable version of WINE from WineHQ, open a terminal and type:Among other things, this will install wine-desktop-files, which adds menu entries for regedit, your C:\ drive and other items which are missing from upstream WINE.Code: Select all

Karl,

Ignorance
Reason #2"
I did a search and the WineHQ site came up first.
Why should I have looked further? I certainly did not know, due to reason #1.
In hindsight, I would have done better to search this site.
Oohh, the wisdom of hindsight!
Give me a day or two to see if I can find out how to do that.
Thanks for the reply, even after I had abandoned this.
Edit: The only reason that I want to install Wine, is to download a purchased online eBook that requires Windows to do so.
Maybe I should resort to a virtual machine?
Jim.

Re: Installing Wine in Mint 19.3 (Abandoned).
FWIW, I don't think anyone should be expected to check the release notes every time they install software, on the off chance there might be a useful tidbit. On the bright side, this is fixable.
And, no, I don't think a VM would be better or easier. Entails a really big learning curve. The objective raises an important question, though. What Windows app do you want to run in Wine? Have you checked whether it works?

Re: Installing Wine in Mint 19.3 (Abandoned).
If you have abandoned wine you might want to try Play-on-Linux. No need to uninstall whatever wine you have now - just install Play-on-Linux from the Software Manager. Come back with another post if you need help running Play-on-Linux.

For reasons that I am unable to explain, Wine is installed on my system, and I do have the eBook file I wanted to read downloaded.
I will try and work out what I did and when I did it to achieve this later.
I have a suspicion that I had it installed and available right from the beginning, but did not know it!
For the time being.........my apologies to all respondents for the assistance.

Re: Success!
Congratulations. Perhaps you've done this already, but be aware there's a second step, where you configure Wine. You should now have a Wine folder on Menu. The config app will be listed there.
Out of curiosity, which version of Wine did you end up with? In Terminal, wine --version will tell us.

As I recall, Wine not on Menu means you installed from Software Manager, probably wine-stable. Which is to say, as I recall, Wine not on Menu was one of the problems the wine-installer package was designed to solve.
If you don't mind, I'd be curious to see the output of apt list --installed wine*. Should be only 4 or 5 lines.

FWIW, my hypothesis is that you installed it a couple years ago (and don't remember), which would cause your recent attempt at installing per the WineHQ instructions to fail. Conversely, had your recent attempt succeeded, you would have v.7.
Anyhoo, my latest questions were out of curiosity. If your problem has been solved, we can let this go.
