"signal" repository http://mirrors.evowise.com "release no longer signed" [SOLVED]

Post by eNG1Ne »

Trying to install signal on my desktop Mint box, following instructions from https://signal.org/download/#
Warning flashes past

Code: Select all

> sudo apt update && sudo apt install signal-desktop
Err:3 http://mirrors.evowise.com/linuxmint/packages ulyssa InRelease
Clearsigned file is not valid, got 'NOSPLIT' (does the network require authentication?)
What's going wrong, and what do I have to do?
Thanks in advance.

Hello, eNG1Ne.

Please, read xenopeek's post/thread here, informing that Evowise has stopped being a Linux Mint software repository and telling what to do:
PSA: EvoWise mirror has shut down, check your Software Sources

Thanks for the tip ‒ I think I now understand the underlying problem. But what's the specific solution? Synaptic doesn't have an entry for signal, and Software Manager comments include a lively warning against using the flatpak. I have, of course, sent the question to Signal as well; if they say there is another repository, I'll post the info here.

Reason: moved here from the PSA topic; that other topic is about the main mirror, not about Signal

The specific solution for the error you're getting—the error that the mirror you're using no longer exists—is in the PSA:
xenopeek wrote: Thu Jul 22, 2021 1:33 am What if you are affected?
If you are affected simply click on the main mirror in Software Sources and choose a different mirror from the list. That fixes this problem.
Afterwards your Software Manager and Update Manager (have you not been installing updates?) should work fine again.

As for Signal, that is not available from the official software repositories. You can either install it from Software Manager as a flatpak—which despite the comments runs fine but will run the software in a security sandbox to protect your OS from internet nasties and that may limit if you want to download stuff from it, though you can easily reconfigure this with Flatseal flatpak—or you can install it from Signal's own repository, that they spell out how to add on their download page: https://signal.org/download/

Following the instructions on the signal page still gets me the same error:
E: Failed to fetch http://mirrors.evowise.com/linuxmint/pa ... /InRelease Clearsigned file is not valid, got 'NOSPLIT' (does the network require authentication?)
E: The repository 'http://mirrors.evowise.com/linuxmint/packages ulyssa InRelease' is no longer signed

Have you removed the Evowise mirror?

Hello, eNG1Ne.

Repeating my post above ....

You first have to replace the Evowise repository for Linux Mint using e.g. Software Sources.
As long as your software sources mention Evowise, you will never get rid of the error message.
And after having corrected your Software Sources you have to do a sudo apt update.

Please, share the output of the terminal command inxi -Sr with us.

Got it! I hadn't understood that the installer (downloaded) relies on local settings (my PC) to resolve where to look for software. Now the penny has dropped, I've updated my repositories and installed sign-desktop … successfully, even ;-} Thanks for your help.
