Nothing on screen when launching Arduino IDE or Wine

Post by fab »

Difficult to explain in English, I hope you will understand...

I have been using Arduino IDE for three years without any problem.
These days, due to a bad manipulation, the program loads but nothing appears on the screen.
I tried to uninstall/install "arduino" without success.
I have deleted all files named "arduino" on my disk: again without result.
.
Each time, something loads for about 20 seconds but at the end, nothing appears.

I have the same problem with "Wine". In the latter case, I can't uninstall Wine and I can't use the Windows software installed under Wine.
Do you have any idea where I should look?
Thank you very much

Thanks for the system report.

What do you mean by "I can't uninstall Wine"? What have you tried? Did you try uninstalling it from the Software Manager, or some other method?

What is the result of the Terminal command wine --version

Which software did you install using Wine? Can you try launching them from the Terminal and show any error messages? Or show screenshots of what happens when you try to launch them?

What do you mean by "due to a bad manipulation"? Did you have disk failure or data loss?

How did you install/uninstall Arduino IDE? Can you give us links/instructions?

@fab
You are mentioning 2 different issue: Wine and Arduino IDE
But for the Arduino IDE you dont not need Wine!
Can you explain how you installed the Arduino IDE?
I have 3 IDE versions on my laptop: 1.8.10, 1.8.12 and 1.8.19
On my desktop I have a shortcut that points to the latest IDE version with the following command:
"/home/wilop/MesApplications/arduino-1.8.19/arduino"

What do you have?

In the folder arduino-1.8.19 I have the following folders:
arduino
hardware
java
lib
libraries
tools
tools-builder

And it contains the following files:
arduino
arduino-builder
arduino-linux-setup.sh
install.sh
revisions.txt
uninstall.sh

You have the same?

Do this for arduino please.
Also the command 'java --version'

Depending on how the Arduino IDE got on your system the command could be simply 'arduino' or a path like 'Downloads/arduino-1.8.19/arduino'
I prefer to download direct from arduino,cc rather than using software-manager/apt

Good evening,

Many thanks to everyone for your answers.

ARDUINO :
After many attempts I managed to reinstall the Arduino IDE.
It works fine now.
I had uninstalled then reinstalled Arduino without result so I installed it again using Synaptic.... Still to no avail.
I then came back through the Mint logiteque and miracle: it works.
Problem solved!

Wine:
Wine worked for a long time without any problems for Faststone and MyphoneExplorer.
To solve a minor display problem under Faststone, I applied a procedure described in a link (which I lost...) From memory it consisted in changing a driver.
Since, Wine does not work anymore.

At first I could uninstall and reinstall Faststone (without it working), the same for MyphoneExplorer...
As I worked on it, everything deteriorated rapidly.

At the moment and after a lot of manipulations which I don't remember anymore (:o)
I see Wine in the list of applications (bottom left)
I do not see it any more in the hidden files (that I saw before)
I see my two softwares fast...and myphone...but I can't access anything.
I can't uninstall or launch anything.
When installing over the existing one it seems to install but no improvement to the problem.
Access in "terminal" does not change anything.
As a last resort I even deleted everything on my hard drive that contained "wine" with no result either.
Thanks to spend time for my problem
screenshots next post....

Hello fab
Happy to see your Arduino IDE issue is solved.
About WINE, not sure I can help but just in case you wrote you "changed a driver".
Actually for your Graphical Card you are using a Nvidia driver - below is an extract of your INXI report:

Code: Select all

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA GK208B [GeForce GT 710] vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: nvidia v: 470.129.06 bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:128b
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: nvidia unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,nouveau,vesa resolution: 2560x1440~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: NVIDIA GeForce GT 710/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 470.129.06 direct render: Yes
Was it related with Nvidia? Or was it a Windows driver?

PS: I'm a noob in WINE but I assume if you deleted the .wine folder you need to reinstall your Win applications. Correct?

From memory, it was a driver for the Windows part of Wine, but I'm not sure because I hadn't really tried to understand what was being proposed.
Then, I accumulated all kinds of more or less happy manipulations without noting what I was doing (Ouch...not on the head :o) )
All my Mint works well, except Wine that I can't uninstall and...obviously reinstall.
I can't remove anything from the application menu.
When I try to install Wine over what's there, there's some work going on at the hard drive level, it seems like an installation of something is happening, but the result is strictly the same.
I'm starting to make backups and will probably reinstall my Linux Mint completely.
That might be the best solution.
Thanks

Hi fab
If you reinstall LM you will need to choose if you will install WINE from the "logithèque" (seems old versions) or from the WINE repository. I have never done it myself but I would do it using this tutorial:

Thanks for the link,
Latest news:
I reinstalled Mint cleanly, but without Wine for this last time.
Previously I had tried to install Wine in several ways, but nothing really worked seriously.
At best I had FastStone working but Myphoneexplorer doesn't work at all.
There are a lot of posts on the internet and different installation packages which makes it very difficult to find the right solution.

I give up.

Hello fab
There are no open-source solutions for FastStone and MyPhoneExplorer meeting your requirements?
PS: Maybe you should open a specific topic for that....
