<SOLVED> Linux Mint 20.3 not turning off, just freezes in Linux Mint logo!

Post by ARSManiac »

Sometimes randomly my OS just doesn't turn off, (i installed a few days ago, traded Dual Boot Windows 8.1/Manajaro for it).
It's completely random and could happen any time (reboot or shutdown), i'm going to shut it down (or reboot it) but then just frezzes in Linux Mint logo.
The only way to turn it off is just force shut down trough the on/off button.
I had manjaro and that didn't happen, it is not serious (Linux Mint was my first distro and i recommend it to experienced and new users) but it is a bit annoying tho, i'm not gonna lie.
Here my machine specs:

From update manager > View > Linux kernels choose to install the kernel 5.4.0-26.30. After that,

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -uk all
sudo update-grub

Reboot and check. I hope it helps.

We have similar systems, I had this recently
- kernel 5.4 updated to 5.4.0-109 and furthers ?
- the time which passed since the first installation ?
- I had installed some nvidia drivers and a Nvidia card (?)

One of this 3 possibilities is the right one, that s what I am sure about this, I go on to investigate
Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon - K 5.15 - Desktop - english
AMD APU A8 7600 - DDR3 1833 MHz 8 GB x2 Dual Channel

Welcome to the forum, ARSManiac.

What is the output of

Code: Select all

lspci | grep -i "VGA\|display"
The graphics output is showing the amdgpu driver loaded which may mean your system has dual graphics even though only one device is listed. The command I suggested you run will indicate if that is the case.

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Mullins [Radeon R4/R5 Graphics] vendor: Hewlett-Packard
driver: radeon v: kernel bus ID: 00:01.0 chip ID: 1002:9851
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: amdgpu,ati,radeon
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: AMD KABINI (DRM 2.50.0 5.4.0-117-generic LLVM 12.0.0)
v: 4.5 Mesa 21.2.6 direct render: Yes

It is my understanding for KABINI that one has to load kernel parameters in order for amdgpu to run, but we would need to know more information about the device to know for sure what is happening.

SMG the output of the command you gave me is this:

Code: Select all

00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Mullins [Radeon R4/R5 Graphics] (rev 05)
01:00.0 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260/M265 / M340/M360 / M440/M445 / 530/535 / 620/625 Mobile]

Changing the kernel is also a good idea (it solved a minor issue i had in Manjaro a while ago).

Thank you guys for all the effort to solve this!

The default timeout is pretty short, something like 10 seconds ? This was too fast for my old machine but for yours I offer this more as an experiment than a fix.
The setting can be found in /etc/systemd/system.conf.d/50_linuxmint.conf
I set this to 90 sec which is ridiculous but it solved the problem permanently. To repeat, for your machine this is offered as a possible troubleshooting tool, not a fix.
You can read the last shutdown sequence with the command journal. Others here will know the exact syntax/options to use with that command

edit/ journalctl -b1 -r
not journal

Notice how the second line is much longer than the first one? There is a bug in an underlying program used by inxi that cuts off information in the long Topaz XT line. Users on this forum actually helped the inxi developer discover that issue in this topic My AMD gpu is missing in action. (Found)(?Resolved?).

Newer versions of inxi (which you can install using directions in this topic How to Update the inxi command to the latest version) have a workaround in place so both of your computer's GPUs would show in the output instead of just the one showing.

You would probably want to go to a newer kernel version such as 5.13 considering you were using Manjaro. The 5.13 kernel series is available in Update Manager and would provide a newer amdgpu driver for your computer's discrete GPU.

I'm not sure how Manjaro handled dual-graphics laptops, but the default in Linux Mint is to have the onboard graphics render. One can usually switch to using the dGPU with a terminal command.

While I did see Mullins in the listing as being able to use amdgpu (by adding kernel parameters), I didn't see indications that Radeon R4/R5 was Mullins so it may not be all of them which can use the kernel parameters to use the amdgpu driver.

That's fine. Hopefully, the newer kernel helps.

If you need instructions for making the discrete GPU the primary renderer, just let us know.

Thanks SMG, for now no more freezing and since i updated the kernel the performance in games improved greatly!

Is there a reason to make the discrete GPU the primary render? Because everything works great here.

Oh btw i noticed a message that appears before the login screen that says: "topaz is not supported in kdf". Does this means something or should i ignore it?
Everything works fine tho, even better since i changed to a newer kernel.

If everything is working well for you, then you do not need to switch renderers.

Some people run games or other software which run better with the processing power of the discrete GPU.

I looked up the message and found this "Topaz is not supported in kfd" after upgrade to 21.04. The poster found the message cleared after they updated their computer's BIOS/UEFI.

Ok thanks for all the support!
SMG if you can, give me the commands to switch renders (switch and switch back).

I really like using Linux and always apreciate the help of the forums, i think we have a great community!
Linux Mint is my main option for the machine that everyone uses here in my home.
My favorite distros are POP_OS!, Linux Mint and Manjaro. I use AntiX, Q4OS and Bodhi Linux for older machines (32bits).

Once again thank you guys very much!!!

I created a tutorial How to switch to the dedicated GPU on a laptop with Intel-AMD switchable graphics or AMD-AMD switchable graphics.

Many solutions tried but the only one that worked was changing the timeout
in /etc/systemd/system.conf.d/50_linuxmint.conf

Thanks
