Unacceptable behaviour from Linux Mint

Post by Menard »

Hello

Clearly replacing our kernel by another one without demanding ....

K 5.4.0-117 replaced by 5.4.0-121 and removed

I currently use the last 5.13

It probably happened while I was working on it and I had a total freeze of the display wich forced me to use the keys with Alt to force shutdown with risks for my hard disk and my data

Turn off automatic updates?
You can't expect to have that box ticked then complain when it does what you've told it to.

Edit,
My apologies. I didn't know about the buggy update manager.

You are sure that this was not really the 5.4.0 "Linux Kernel Headers for development" package linux-libc-dev?
This would explain why 5.4.0-121 replaced 5.4.0-117. Full kernel updates always just install the latest version in addition to the older one, never replacing them. But the "Linux Kernel Headers for development" package always replaces the previous package.

Actually it is the group name, which Update Manager displays for the "Linux Kernel Headers for development" package, which manages to make 99,9% of the users confuse it with the full kernel update.

Checking which updates have been installed inside the Update Manager History would be a way of finding out. Better than depending on guesses.

Weird. Your signature seemed to suggest it were 5.13.0.

Normally you would be right. But remember that there was shortly the buggy update manager 5.8.3, which silently activated automatic updates. User, who did not get aware of this bug, cannot get blamed because of the buggy software.

@Menard: Check the automatic update option in update manager and disable it if needed.

Perhaps 4.13 is a typo? 4.13 doesn't seem to make sense.

Yes it is the 5.13, not 4.13 and I never enabled automatic updates
I am sure of this because there were some updates left that I had allways unchecked when updating

I don't think it is an extension because I've checked this

Code: Select all

dpkg --list | grep linux-image
ii linux-image-5.13.0-51-generic 5.13.0-51.58~20.04.1 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-5.4.0-121-generic 5.4.0-121.137 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-generic 5.4.0.121.122 amd64 Generic Linux kernel image
ii linux-image-generic-hwe-20.04 5.13.0.51.58~20.04.31 amd64 Generic Linux kernel image
but before doing the topic I had uninstalled the 5.4

Has this update manager a setting for each user ?

Hello, Menard.

You still have both kernel series installed: 5.13.0-xx (which you want and use) and 5.4.0-xx (which you no longer want).
Inside update manager go to View => Linux Kernel. Locate the kernel tab 5.4.0.
Select each kernel 5.4.0-xx, which is marked as "Installed", and click on [Remove], which will uninstall it.

Once all kernels of the series 5.4.0-xx have been uninstalled, no more kernel updates for 5.4.0-xx should be ever offered for installation.
The updates for the 5.4.0 "Linux Kernel Headers for development" package linux-libc-dev will be offered and should be installed, however.

Karl

I must be clearer

1- I had the issue described in the subject of the topic, then
2- I ve done some system check including terminal commands (result posted higher) then
2- I uninstalled the 5.4.0-121 because I ve never wanted it , then
3- I made the topic here

Hello, Menard.

As Cosmo. had mentioned above, very likely you were one of the users, whose systems suffered from negative side effects, which were caused by bugs that had been implemented into mintupdate versions 5.8.2 and 5.8.3 and that got fixed by mintupdate 5.8.4. (cf. e.g. here)

One of this side effects will have been that the old kernel series 5.4.0-xx on your system got updated to 5.4.0-121 automatically and without your consent.
Your dpkg output above clearly suggests that K5.4.0-121 is still present on your system. (Even though you may have tried uninstalling it.)

Suggestion #1:
Please, check the Update Manager version. It should be 5.8.4. (This is the bug-fixed updated mintupdate.)
Next, please, check your Automation settings in Update Manager. Make sure that only those automatic operations have been enabled, which you want to be enabled.

Back to kernel series 5.4.0:
I suspect that kernel 5.4.0-121 is present on your system still, because the corresponding kernel meta-package linux-image-generic is still present. This meta-package will prevent kernel 5.4.0-121 from being uninstalled successfully.

Suggestion #2:
Let us, please, check which all kernel software packages are really present on your system. And let us do so using the commandline.
Reason for preferring the commandline:
Only 1 single commandline will be needed to find out. No clicking around through several tabs in Update Manager required this way.
  • Please, execute the following commandline in a terminal window. - Best copy it from this post and paste it into the terminal window.

    Code: Select all

    LC_ALL=C dpkg --list 'linux-*' | egrep "^ii|^rc|Name|==="
  • Mark the complete output, which the command will display, with your mouse.
  • Press <Shift><Ctrl>c in order to copy the marked text output.
  • Paste it into your next reply, please.
This will help clear up whether anything needs to be uninstalled still and if so which packages precisely.

Best regards,
Karö

Hello, Menard.

Good news - but you very likely knew so already:
Only the kernel packages belonging to kernel 5.13.0-51 are installed on your system.
Plus, of course, the "Linux Kernel Headers for development", package linux-libc-dev, version 5.4.0-117.132.
This package will remain on version 5.4.0-xxx.
If the Update Manager wants to update this to some higher 5.4.0-xxx number, then this is ok. Will not pull in the old 5.4.0 kernel packages again.
Nothing left to be uninstalled at the time being.

Best regards,
Karl
