if I try to install something it starts removing linux-image-5.4.0-105 and stops half way through and goes no further.
How do I remove linux-image-5.4.0-105 manually?
can't install anything it wants to remove linux-image-5.4.0-105-generic

Perhaps automated deletion of obsolete kernels is initiated whenever you use the update manager. Untick the option (preferences->automation). Can you still get n apply other updates without any update manager 'hangings'?

I check it is set to off

What is this "something", which you try to install?
Which application have you used in order to initiate the installation of this "something"?
I ask, because if you initiate an installation using e.g. Synaptic package manager, Synaptic would warn you if the requested installation were going to require uninstalling anything beforehand.
Plus Synaptic will not do so without your explicit prior consent.
Therefore it is important to know which software you want to install, because there must be some kind of conflict between this software and kernel 5.4.0-105. (though off-hand I cannot imagine which conflict. Synaptic e.g. would precisely tell you what the conflict is.)

It is also imaginable that the conflict, which triggers uninstalling kernel 5.4.0-105, existed already before you decided to install something.
More likely than not it will be necessary to find out whether your system is in an inconsistent state and resolving the inconsistency, before installing or uninstalling anything.

I updated package manager and it resolved the problem.
