VLC does not work on Linux Mint 20.3

Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon x64.
VLC stopped working, namely, it does not start by the startup icon, any file and stream does not play (if you run it without a shortcut and it eventually started).

I found out that VLC has been updated for a long time, and this version apparently has a vulnerability. Resource https://www.videolan.org/vlc/#download sends to https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/vlc which provides a non-working version of VLC 3.0.9.2.

LMDE has 3.17.4, maybe try the flatpak or appimage version for Mint 20.3 instead?

If you must have vlc, install it via flatpak. VLC has been such a hot mess for me, for so long, that I stopped using it and now use smplayer, which just works. VLC hasn't had just one problem, it has had several and I just got fed up.

Open vlc. If it refuses to open, type "killall vlc" in a terminal, then try again.

Go to Tools menu -> Preferences. Select the "Video" tab up top.

Then, where it says "Output", select "XVideo Output (XCB)".

Yeah, VLC is just not as snappy as Celluloid+MPV or SMPlayer etc are.

I would avoid VLC unless absolutely needed.

p.s. Celluloid is installed by default on Mint. but I suggest doing a 'sudo apt install mpv' from terminal since it will then allow Celluloid to use hardware acceleration when possible.

With Win I had a tool that was working perfectly, it was even able to capture frame by frame, able to chose a frame precisely, very easily, and it was developped by an internet friend ... in part customized with me using direct show

1. You cannot update
In my experience 3.0.9.2 is stable on LM 20.3. Flatpak is slower and does not integrate 100% seamlessly with the default or customized Cinnamon I recall.
If y miss newer features, certainly Flatpak is the way.

2. You cannot play video(s)
We need more info. Codec/format/bitrate.
I assume you have installed the multimedia-codec package.

3. Slow start or not starting at all launched from menu
Be sure that you are not affected by this bug. I had the problem when I installed 20.3. It's not VLC-specific.

I use VLC 3.0.17.4, flatpak version, with Mint 20.3 Mate and no problem.
