[SOLVED] Mint Cinnamon (20.3) lock screen upper right corner notification

Post by hehemrin »

Mint Cinnamon 20.3 lock screen: The top right corner has a frame. Inside the frame there can be a battery symbol (ok). But often I also have a "!" in a baloon and a digit, typically 1, 2 or 3 before the baloon. What does it mean? I haven't figured out relation to any corresponding notification or info when I am logged in. I'm curious.
(I have not installed and checked release 21 yet)

But what kind of notifications? It does as far as I can trace not correspond to missed notifications in the standard cinnamon notification center (located in the bottom right end when I am logged in, in default view settings). Notification center is normally empty despite a number in the lock screen. So do you know where I can find those notifications? I have thought if it can be notifications from a specific sw, but I cannot think of any. Or related to any other installed distro, or drives, partitions etc, but nothing that make sense.

I mean actually the notifications applet. There is no other place for notifications in Cinnamon. If the shown value in the screensaver display and the actually existing notifications do match, is another question, but I never jumped behind it.

That my explanation in the previous post is right, can be proven by yourself. Open the screensaver settings and hover the relevant option, this gives you a tooltip.

Thanks Cosmo, you are right, I checked the tooltip now for the screen saver. So then, the question is really why they aren't in the notifications I changed notifications settings to include volatile notifications (I am not sure of wording in the English Cinnamon), but that did not help to match. Maybe ther is another setting. Anyway, thanks again, now I got the answer that it is missed notifications.

I'm running into a similar situation. I'm running a script to check RSS feeds of the national weather service for weather alerts and trigger notify-send if an alert matches say my county, city and some keywords like tornado, severe thunderstorm or special weather statement.

If I get an alert and the screen is locked it informs me of the notification. Upon unlocking the desktop and particularly if Cinnamon was restarted by an automatic update the notifications are empty.

I'm no dbus guru but I've been experimenting with storing notifications, and say I want to see the notifications from my phone too, maybe something warpinator could hook in with.

After re-watching that the thing I have in Python could be an over-complication. I might shoot to be more bash centric. It would be ace to be able to have a "notifications center" previous notifications from the past 48 hours in a JSON file or a "read missed and previous notifications" in the settings of notifications applet.
