Mint 21 Redshift [RESOLVED]

Post by yonderboy »

Having recently sweated my way through updating to Mint 21, I've been plodding through reinstalling all my little gewgaws that make things a touch easier. One of these was Redshift.

As I suffer from chronic migraines, blue light is absolute murder on my poor, soupy brain. Yet when I go to install Redshift, either from the source or through the Software Manager, I am met with a little spit of a widget that does little to nothing and has no customisability. Worse, it flickers!

I bring this up because, before the update, the version of Redshift I had been using was a full-bodied experience with a robust customisability menu completely at odds with the bare-bones versions I am faced with at the moment.

I cannot, for the life of me, seem able to find that fuller version of Redshift and the lack is absolutely excruciating.

If it as at all possible, perhaps someone could point me in the right direction or suggest an alternative? I'd use f.lux but that is, apparently, not actively supported on Linux.

you and me both, I have had Cataract Lense replacements, and ever since then blue light has been a killer.

Switch to Qredshift instead:

download from https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/313

Sets brightness, gamma levels and color temperature with Redshift.
This applet conflicts with redshift-gtk, make sure you remove it.

Installation

Install Redshift:
Debian/Ubuntu/Linux Mint: sudo apt-get install redshift
Or automatically download it from Cinnamon Applets download tab.
Applet will automatically attempt to disable the default redshift service.

Yes! That's the one!

I was confusing it with the other Redshift that exists for reasons I'm not interested in knowing.

Thank you so much, the instant, heartfelt sigh of relief when I tuned it to 2700k is dedicated to you.

Eyestrain solidarity, comrade.

Also if your running the cinnamon DE then there is a redshift applet you can use which allows you to modify the redshift setting. Installing the applet works really smoothly. To install it just right click on a blank section of the panel and select applets from the menu, I don't remember but you may have to go to the download tab to download the the manage tab to actually install it. Good luck.

I had forgotten about the applet, here is how mine looks this morning, the controls change through the daylight hours, I am often on my laptop at 3 a.m. and no lights on in the house, those sliders get moved around a lot.
