I restarted pulseaudio and now the system is without sound. What can I do to get it working again, without rebooting?

You may disconnect/reconnect without to restart. Please check the Menu.

What should I do with the menu? Not knowing exactly what you meant, I selected the Sound settings. I was able to test-play the system sounds successfully, but the actual system sounds (eg. switching workspaces, plugging an USB device) did not come back. I finally succeeded by restarting Cinnamon.

Ah, I meant the Mint menu the one where you stop your PC, just above button to stop there's another to disconnect current user.
You're right that's almost same than restart Cinnamon.
