Flatseal background portal permission grayed out, trying to get deja dup flatpak permission to run in background

Post by tzell »

Hi forum,
I'm trying to get deja dup flatpak to run in background
Flatseal background portal permission grayed out
says "portal data has not been set up yet"

Perhaps a silly question - but how do I enable it?
I'm not even sure what a portal is.

deja dup issue:

flatseal says "portal data has not been set up yet"

On flatseal documentation page:
https://github.com/tchx84/Flatseal/blob ... md#portals

Do I need to install org.freedesktop.portal.background?
If so, how do I do it?

Thanks!

Hi,

If it is grayed in flatseal, it means that the flatpak version cannot run in the background. This may be a bug to report to deja dup flatpak editors.

Note that it may not be a good idea to use a backup program in its flatpak version: it will not access any other flatpak directory and, if you have something to backup from a flatpak app (as an example, your mails and profile from Thunderbird flatpak), it will not work.

Regards,

MN

Thanks for the reply,
it would seem the grayed section is gray in every flatpak software, so I think its an issue with flatseal and not deja dup in particular.

And why can't flatpak apps access other flatpaks?

Any other backup application you'd recommend?

I'm using deja-dup and timeshift,
but as far as I understand timeshift doesn't back up user files , just the operating system.

Hi,

Flatpak is a sandboxing system, and flatpak apps run isolated from the system or from other flatpak apps. Particularly, anything having "var" (reserved keyword) in its path cannot be accessed by a flatpak app (except its own directories).

Flatpak applications and runtimes directories are in "/var/lib/flatpak" and user files / profiles are in "/home/username/.var/app". So, a flatpak backup app could not backup another flatpak files, flatpak Thunderbird email files being an example.

Backup:
- I use Foxclone for system backups, Timeshift for system snapshots.
- I use FreeFileSync for my home backup (it is a differential backup).

I do manual backups (not scheduled ones), so no background; since backup is a safeguard measure, backup disk should not be mounted permanently (to reduce its wear, to avoid accidental deletion etc.). And it should NOT be the same disk as system or home one (in case of disk failure, original files and backup ones would be lost).

Regards,

MN
