I was typing document on WPS writer. Saved and closed. Performed an update on the system. Rebooted. Then the file was not where i saved it.
It appears on the WPS - Menu - Open - Recent list
When i click on it it says 'unable to open "/home/angelo/2018 Admission and incident .docx". This file may have been renamed, deleted or moved'
I did not any such thing.
I really need to recover this file. Please help
I recently updated to mint 21
WPS version is 11.1.0.11664 - flatpak version

Re: Can't locate file - WPS writer file
Have you used the search tool and looked for a file containing '2018' in the file name?
Looked in the Trash?

Re: Can't locate file - WPS writer file
The error message is for right: The file with the given path has once existed and now it must have been deleted, renamed or moved. As you have looked int the trash this leaves only 2 option. Renaming has the problem, that the file will now have a quite different name. But one thing should hopefully not have been changed: The extension. So do a search for .docx files.
Besides that I wonder: If the file should be 4 years old, there can many things have happened. And: There should be a backup been done in those 4 years.

Re: Can't locate file - WPS writer file
Thanks
File isn't 4 years old. Created 3 hours before the incident (of the file disappearing)
Does not come up in a .docx search - using Catfish file search - other files do, but not this one or one with different name but the correct content
Could the update have caused some problem?

Catfish uses a database for quicker search results. Click the hamburger menu and select to renew it.
And no, the upgrade does not move, delete or rename anything on your home. That must have been you.

Re: Can't locate file - WPS writer file
Sometimes it doesn't save to the desired location if I had previously saved a file to another location. Then it helps to create any file and save it. It then shows the last selected location.
This is not true for all programs, and maybe not in your case. Just an idea.
Did you do the search only in /home? Extend it to other directories or even drives.

How you get better results when searching for yourself.

Please post the output of this in a terminal:
and then this:
Code: Select all
ls -la /home/angelo
Code: Select all
find ~ -iname "*2018 Admission*"
