Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
I use Boinc on every pc and after installing Linux Mint ver 21 on 2 different pc's, and of course doing an update for everything, I then used Synaptic to install Boinc and some of it's other related software on the pc's. After rebooting the pc's neither pc would open Boinc saying it couldn't open the /var/lib/Boinc folder due to a permission issue. Doing the exact same process using Linux Mint ver 20.2 Boinc works perfectly and the pc is now crunching tasks just fine. All of those permission things should be set by the software unless of course the system is preventing it.

I have the same problem on multiple computers. I upgraded to LM21 and boincmanager won't start. I did a fresh install of LM21 and boincmanager has the same problem. Trying to start boincmanage results in a core dump.

Re: Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
I did a 2nd fresh install of LM21 from bootable DVD and instead of using Software Manager to install BOINC manager I went directly to the boinc website and downloaded it from there. After installing boinc manager that I got from the boinc website I still have the same problem.

Re: Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
I experienced similar problem as well after clean install of LM21 Cinnamon. Both 7.18.1+dfsg-4 version from default repositories and 7.20.2+dfsg+202207181724 from ppa:costamagnagianfranco/boinc did not allow me to launch BOINC Manager by just clicking on it in the menu. Temporary solution that I found is to start client by executing following command in the terminal:
and then launching manager from the terminal as well:
After successfully launch of the manager I get following warning "GUI RPC password is empty. BOINC can be controlled by any user on this computer. See https://boinc.berkeley.edu/gui_rpc_passwd.php for more information". This wasn't the case in previous versions of Linux Mint.
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/boinc-client start

Re: Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
I had to do this first
After successfully launch of the manager I get following warning "GUI RPC password is empty. BOINC can be controlled by any user on this computer. See https://boinc.berkeley.edu/gui_rpc_passwd.php for more information". This wasn't the case in previous versions of Linux Mint
Then your suggested steps/ Now I am up
Thank You

Re: Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
Now partially up. As soon as I closed the boinc manager window it would never open again.. However top shows the client has 6 tasks running. I hope this gets fixed soon in a LM 21 update.. I have 4 LM21 boxes running einstein@home even though the boinc manager won't start.

Re: Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
For me opening manager work every time. Now that I actually followed instruction attached to the warning (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/gui_rpc_passwd.php), I can open manger by just clicking on an icon. Client has to be started separately before that.
Re: Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
That's the trick. I have to:
sudo systemctl restart boinc-client Everytime
Or just never close the boinc manager window. I can live with that for a while. The 4 computers with a problem are only used for running einstein@home.
Arrrrrgh! I just tried this with one of the other computers and when I tried to start boinc managr it said "illegal instruction" and core dumped. I still can't run boinc manager and now it is no longer processing einstein@home data. Shot myself in the foot trying to fix things. Arrrgh!

Re: Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
After fighting with this for way too long I used software manager to uninstall everything having to do with boinc on the computer I shot myself in the foot on. I then discovered that using software manager to install boinc manager flatpak installs a newer version of boinc. I then used software manager to install boinc client and now everything works.

Re: Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
Some thing is still wrong. With the help of several other users of both boinc and LM21 that all have this problem I have all of the LM21 computers working on data from einstein@home. However all my computers that had boinc installed using the boinc Meta package installed by Software manager are crippled. Clicking on Boinc manager does nothing. Trying to start boinc manager from the command line (boincmgr) gives you a message "Illegal Instruction" and core dumps. I can't figure out whether the problem is with the boinc installed by software manager or with LM21. These computers are all Dell I7 desktops with either 8gb of memory or 16 gb of memory. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Boinc doesn't work after using Synaptic to install it under LM21
Bumping in the hope of someone finding a solution.
Same behavior as those above with boinc 7.20.2+dfsg+202209122149~ubuntu22.04.1
I can get it to open with errors using in terminal but any automation using the same command fails.
