[SOLVED] Linux-image-5.15.0-46 generic sub process error 1

Post by Andrer »

After updating to Linux Cinnamon 21 from 20.3. Each time there is an update I get an error message about the 5.15.0-46

HERE is what I see: [ Installed
OR:
ERRORS encountered while processing Linux-image-5.15.0-46-generic package post installation script sub process returned error exit status 1

Can you help? Thank you
Andre

MORE INFO:

I can see that I have 2 boot file -43 and -46 BUT only 5.15.0-43 will boot the computer

should there be only one KERNEL active? is that the problem?

That is because only -43 is installed properly.

You received errors when installing -46 so it is not installed properly and thus you can not boot with it.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Were there any other messages after this? Often the system will give a suggestion of what to do to fix the problem.

Re: Linux-image-5.15.0-46 generic sub process error 1

Post by Andrer »

Hi and thank you for helping

In the Update Manager I can see that 5.15.0-43 is ACTIVE ( SUPERSEDED )
It also shows that 5.15.0-46 is INSTALLED
There I can only REMOVE it or leave it alone

The problem shows up when the Update Manager says that i need to update
All goes well and at the end I get the ERRORS message

Your system is showing it is using -43.

Please open a terminal and run the following and paste all the output of the command here.

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a
Usually, when getting an error message like you described, the system will give suggestions of what to try. What I listed above is a common suggestion. Let's see if it helps fix whatever is "stuck" in your system.

If the output does not seem to fix the problem, then we will try removing and then re-installing -46 (which you can do in the Update Manager screen which tells you -43 is "Active" and -46 is "Installed").

No. You are supposed to have one for each kernel.

I do see additional information of something to try in the output you posted. We have to resolve the errors in the order they are posted. This is the first error.

Code: Select all

/etc/grub.d/bin/grubcfg_proxy: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.1.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
A number of people have run into this error after updating. I know there are posts on the forum about resolving it. I will go find the info and get back to you.

This is the topic (SOLVED) Linux Mint 21 kern 5.15.0-46.49 update fail - libcrypto.so.1.1 missing.

Have you ever used Grub Customizer? Past use of that app seems to be a common link of those running into this issue.

No I have never used it!

One more thing. On my older laptop I have installed Linux 21 ( from 20.3 ) and I do not have this problem

BUT in Update Manager It does not list 5.15.0-46
It shows 5.15.0-43 ACTIVE Supported until April 2027

The part I have highlighted is not a standard Linux Mint file. Usually, the way it ends up on computers is when someone uses Grub Customizer. I do not know if perhaps there are other programs which use it.

/etc/grub.d/bin/grubcfg_proxy: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.1.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

The latest 5.15 kernel is 5.15.0-46 so I'm not sure why your older laptop is not yet showing it.

OR:

Would you simply remove 5.15.0-46 for now?

You need to fix the missing package per the information in the other topic.

I have never heard of apt check so I'm not sure what that is referencing.

I have used sudo update-grub after making changes to a grub file. It is my understanding that is a step one must do with the Grub Customizer changes in the grubcfg_proxy file.
