system freezes when I try to suspend - possibly related to wlan or cinnamon crashing

Post by geronimus »

I recently installed mint Vanessa cinnamon, and I have an issue that I never had with Una:
It has happened several times now that the OS crashes and I cannot shut down or log out of the session using the appropriate keyboard shortcut. I think it might have to do with my wlan or with cinnamon crashing, which are also two new issues I've been having: Sometimes when I resume from suspend my weather app (mockturtle) does not refresh, and when I click on refresh, cinnamon crashes. It also happened a couple of times that my smartphone's internet hotspot did not deliver any data even though all looked fine. That issue is not resolved by reconnecting but only when I restart my phone. This was never a problem with Una.

I am grateful for any suggestions.

P.S. It just happened again when I tried to suspend. Perhaps it is just an issue on suspending. After restarting mint, suspending works just fine. The keyboard shortcut for shutting down does not work, though - the system only suspends when I press these keys.

I include two screenshots, one with important logs only and another with all that was logged around the critical time:

Looks like your hardware is quite new, and you don't have the right display drivers loaded:

Code: Select all

OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe
This means you're running software rendering, without hardware acceleration.

Considering other hardware-related issues you're having (crashes, freezes, suspend issues etc.) my guess is that the 5.15 kernel is not working well with your hardware. You might want to try using the OEM kernel. Install apt install linux-oem-22.04 and see if that helps.

AMD "Lucienne" is supported since kernel 5.11.
There have been several bug reports about "'suspend" with "AMD Ryzen 5 5500u with Radeon Graphics".
Examples:
Kernel BUG with AMDGPU when resuming from system suspend
Black screen after suspend on Ryzen 5500u
Solutions attempted: 1. Update to new kernels. 5.15 should have been OK. 2. Revert to old firmware because newer is buggy.
I tend to believe it's 2 in your case. You had this working on Una and you should enjoy proper full OpenGL support on your 5.15 kernel but you don't.

Ah so it's a firmware issue. These things are very hard to detect...

Thank you for your advice. I remembered that I've only been having these troubles very recently, so I started the system with the Kernel: 5.15.0-41. The problems are gone now. The -46 version lead to these problems, the -43 one is not installed.
If I do not want to have to select the older kernel in grub every time I boot, do I have to uninstall the -46 one?
I do not understand, how the loading of fw for devices through the kernel works - Isn't fw for the gpu or the wlan adapter 3rd party software provided by the manufacturer? In that case, wouldn't updates be infrequent?

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the wlan problem persists. Although it looks like I am connected to my phone's hotspot, I cannot retrieve mails in thunderbird, and when I try to refresh weather by mockturtle, cinnamon crashes. This did not happen before the update to Vanessa.

Yes.

The firmware mentioned in the bug reports is part of the graphics driver. The graphics driver is in the kernel. There is also firmware in the linux-firmware packages.

You might want to try the 5.17-oem kernel spamegg suggested to see if the graphics driver in it helps. Your computer has a rather new CPU so a newer kernel might have better support.

It's possible mockturtle is not yet "Jammy/Vanessa" ready.
