Trouble copying XP install disk to USB stick.

Post by edzell »

Linux mint 17. I want to create a bootable USB stick of WinXP, using USB image writer with XP install disk in the DVD tray. My computer file manager sees that disk but usb writer does not. When it asks what to copy from, I can't make it choose, or suggest, the XP disk. The USB stick is formatted FAT32 but I don't get far enough to find out if it's accepted as a destination.

Mint 17?

This piece is since more than 3 years out of support. You have a far more urgent problem.

Cosmo's response is off-topic and unhelpful: Can anyone else shed light on the problem I described?

make an ISO from the CD using XFBurn, Brasero or K3b first because copying straight from CD to USB is asking for integrity issues anyway even if your utility let you do so.

Then use unetbootin from the ppa to write the usb stick (select trusty as your ubuntu version)

I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Thanks, antikythera. I thought making an ISO is what usb image writer would do.

USB image writer is too dumb for that unfortunately

I've used unetbootin for at least 9 years and it's never failed me ( other than ensuring my CUSTOM linux mint cinnamon iso could be bootable via physical drive vs vm)

If that doesn't work, try Ventoy using the instructions below to prep the thumb drive

download it here = https://ventoy.net/en/download.html
== this youtube video's instructions on how to install ventoy into a thumb drive as well as ssd ( I ensured both types of drivesit were already formatted to fat32 ) worked for me
