Thunderbird goes to 97% of CPU

Post by elmarts »

Following this latest update, TB takes over the CPU and become unresponsive. Bug? Fixes?

Can't say I've noticed any issues with the 102.2.2 update that appeared yesterday in update manager. I have it open all the time and it's currently sitting there using no CPU power and 355MB RAM according to System Monitor. That's just mine though. I'm sure others can pipe in with some suggestions to check.

Have to agree with OP. When I open TB 102 it often freezes and crashes. When it works it is using nearly 100% of 2 or more cores of the CPU and after about 20-30 seconds the CPU usage returns to normal

Certainly is much more user friendly and nicer looking otherwise though. Hopefully it is fixed soon

I also got this Thunderbird facelift not too long ago, with the same problem, and just fixed it with this.

https://rainbow.chard.org/2013/02/19/th ... -high-cpu/

It seems old and arcane but it also seems to have worked (especially since this fix specifically calls out the improper number of zeroes in mail.db.idle_limit in the Config Editor).

Welcome to the forum, NeptNutz. You are not using Linux Mint Main edition (which is where this topic is posted), but your response may help those who have posted.

Just as an FYI, we do have LMDE Forums.

Sorry it didn't work for you.

Was the value of mail.db.idle_limit in the Config Editor like the link said?

Yes exactly. I added two zeros to the number. I found TBB still stalling and going to Force Quit. I also looked at system monitor and it showed cores going up to 100% usage in sequence pretty much like it did before I made the change

I'm not gonna lie. It works 'better' than it did, but it's still a little bit wonky for me.

Take a look.

I jumped into Synaptic and reverted Thunderbird with Package -> Force Version from the main menu. Of course, once I launched Thunderbird, I had to update to the latest version again. At first (as always), it seemed ... a little bit ... better, but looking at the attachments above, it's still kind of a disaster right now.

Just for comparison, here is Evolution directly after launch.

Not my favorite email client, to say the least, but performing much better than Thunderbird right now.

Hi,

Thunderbird latest revision is 102.3.1.

No CPU problem here with it, in its flatpak version. CPU and network peaks correspond to Thunderbird launch and query of distant mail servers.
Capture du 2022-10-07 10-04-43.png
NB: you can have 102.3.1 version if you use the flatpak version or if you use Thunderbird downloaded from thunderbird.net. In both cases you can have automatic updates.

Regards,

MN

It only seems wonky at startup. If I leave it for a 20 seconds it resolves itself.
