//// I posted this in Main Edition < Software & Applications because I wonder if Nemo is involved. If it isn't please tell me where this should be moved. Thank you \\\\\\\\\

*** Problem = this drive takes around 30 seconds to finally automount/show up in Nemo as well as gnome-disks from the moment I plug it into any usb 3.0 port ( regardless of which one...tried rear ports also...no external usb hubs either in the mix) ***

This is meant as a quick connect/disconnect external storage drive I use specifically only for Rsync- ing my /home folder as well as all of my game installation executable files. It isn't a world ending deal breaker if I cannot solve this mystery. , but it makes no sense why it should take this long when my other ssd's don't take this long regardless of size ( one is another 4TB samsung evo 860 that I use for Foxclone ..clones for my main 4TB nvme drive. and it auto mounts in less than 7 seconds worst case...consistently )

here's lsblk -f

And yes..I've tested if the 16TB toshiba hdd made a difference completely disconnecting it after proper system power down, rinse and repeat. still the same 30 ish seconds to mount that 4TB Rsync named ssd.

I'm also curious if I could remove the line talking about Foxclone ( since I only connect that drive when i boot into my 4TB samsung evo 860 ssd to do foxclone ..clones......and that wouldn't cause any problems. = wondering if that matters or is involved (shrugs)

If I have to reformat/start over in any context with this 4TB Rsync sata ssd...no problem, but I would prefer reasonable clarification as to why if that's needed.

Also just tried connecting it to my older 4790k build PC ( LM 21 cinnamon btw), same results of around 35 to 45 seconds to mount.

Tried using gparted to create GPT partition table ( which nuked the data...no prob), then formated to ext4 again. still same result..regardless of usb port used..

Even tried multiple usb - to - sata adapter cables. it didn't matter

Yet..other ssds have no problem mounting in 7 seconds flat regardless of the cable..regardless of the usb port used..and on both machines.

I don’t have answers, but questions (interested n00b here  ):

Didn’t find your drive specs exactly, but my (similar?) drives show up in Nemo (not automount) within 9”, but then to mount and display content it depends on partition type, size and data content, up to 24” seems to be possible (GPT, 1 NTFS partition 4TB, in Win7 I have to retry this drive several times until / if it connects at all).

- When I understand correctly, your issue is : Plug it in, Nemo doesn’t show the drive /partition within 10” (yes, 30+” isn’t OK).
-> Please retry without automount, is the delay to detect the drive controller or read data content?

- In your inxi, ID-3 says Toshiba HDWR31G size: 14.55 TiB … Is it 4 or 14 TB?
(anyway, size shouldn’t really matter if talking about recognizing the drive /partition)

- Your lsblk -f shows sdb as 16TB Toshiba hdd, is it the 4 TB drive or a test only?
How fast does the 16 TB automount respectively detect + mount?

- fstab … I have very little knowledge about, however:
My fstab only has 2 lines like:
UUID=a-b-c-d-e mountpoint fs options (for / and /home)
and one line with /swapfile none.
-> I would not add any other partition which is not required to boot the minimum OS (I’m a control freak, want to know what is in and what is not).
Recommended: Use UUIDs only, no confusion possible.

- I’m on BIOS only, so I don’t know exactly, but why would you (fstab) mount your efi partition (ESP) within the OS, I think it’s not required, on the contrary, would be dangerous?

- The other fstab lines, I don’t know. Why would you try to mount Foxclone, which is, in my case, on an external (Ventoy) drive, to boot if I want to BU the Mint OS. To BU other drives, OK, but as a “default” mount, why?

- In the second post you wrote “Yet..other ssds have…” but the Toshiba is a spinner, can’t be compared to a SSD in data access time, is it a typo?

Sorry, only questions, but you may have some answers?

I have tried without automount. If i had automount enabled upon booting the system up, the system would eventually begin slowly down on boot up speed because fstab is looking for an entry that it cannot detect. That's the entire point of having it as an externally connected drive xD
In your inxi, ID-3 says Toshiba HDWR31G size: 14.55 TiB … Is it 4 or 14 TB?
Um....I already answered that up front..with
Drive in question is ->> ID-3: /media/taco/rsync home backu size: 3.58 TiB used: 1.15 TiB (32.1%
It's a Leven brand ( off brand..which in hindsight..makes me wonder if the nand controller is a lower quality or lower speed controller versus the likes of Crucial or especially Samsung evo line ups. That may be the culprit and it may end up being something I must live it or sell the drive ( shrugs)
but my (similar?) drives show up in Nemo (not automount) within 9”
...interesting way of showing a measurement of seconds..with inches you have there.
- In the second post you wrote “Yet..other ssds have…” but the Toshiba is a spinner, can’t be compared to a SSD in data access time, is it a typo?
Yes..normally 99.99% of the time I would instantly agree through experience, but in my case...my internally connected sata 16TB toshiba 7200 rpm hdd ( yes..spinning rust as Wendell from Level1techs would call it) fully mounts and shows all content 99% of the time faster by a small margin ( mounted and all) than the 40+ consistently counting seconds it takes from the split second I plug in the Level 4TB ssd that is externally connected...to the exact second I see it show up in nemo.

Obviously a sata ssd that is internally connected drive that is set to automount upon system boot up will boot faster.

Ah..I apologize..I forgot about the option to check or uncheck ...within..NEMO. " automount drives that are connected" or something like that.

Trying that now meaning to uncheck that.

It didn't matter unfortunately.

I just noticed something when I checked this drive in gnome-disks

"Disk is OK (60c / 140f ) confused??? and it was idling..not doing anything

My other ssd's are in the sub 30c range. I don't want to , but I'm wondering if I need to open up this damn thing to see if some thermal paste isn't in there or applied or ..something..

Just an opinion / idea here.

Seems like you already did the troubleshooting enough to asume a hardware issue with the drive itself, if you plugged it to different systems and USB adapters, formatted it and noticed the temperature difference.

I checked the manufacturer website, they do not even have firmware updates or anything there.

I would get a similar one off Amazon, compare and then return it back. This way you can confirm if there is a hardware issue. Then if there is anything wrong with it, RMA. Maybe you are still under the 3 year warranty period?

axrusar- Yeap..those are valid points.

On an odd result...I took the ssd itself ( as in it's motherboard assembly...it's tiny xD ) out of the ssd encasing. rinsed and repeated all procedures...still idles at freaking 60c and often 66c ( room temp is 69F btw.... nice :P ).

I even put a trailer gladhand under it jacking it up off of my wooden desk I let it lie upon while connected via that usb to sata adapter cord to the front usb ports to give it alittle natural gentle airflow.. same results

Now when i connect it to a rear usb 3.0 port. It STAYS ( per gnome-disk) at 39c idling and only after writing 116.8GBs of data did it reach 59c. THIS...is within normal ssd temps imo.

I ask myself "Why should a rear usb port make a ssd run hotter than the front ones? " *scratches chin curiously*

Just asking - Is your mount point correct???

Shouldnt it be: /mnt/rsync/040home/040backup

The mount point is with forward slashes..

I don't know why fstab into shows back slashes.

Technically now since I reformatted it. I left it to be be auto mounted at /media/taco/homebackup

Apparently \040 is a replacement for a space in the fstab file. So your fstab may be fine as-is.

Now i noticed my samsung 860 evo 4TB..that used to mount in 10 seconds or less is taking longer and longer each time to auto mount when plugged in. Dammit. :?

The Samsung's temps are staying rock solid at less than 33c under an over 100GBs of file sized mixture data being written to it.

How about capturing some log file data?

Unplug the drive and open a term window.
Then type this into the term window:
tail -f /var/log/kern.log
Then plug in the drive and watch the output (and post it) from the kern.log file.

Lets see if we find something funny going on.

I hand counted around 48 seconds..plugged in via usb 3.0 -to- sata gen 3 cable from the ssd to a front usb 3.0 port ( other drives plugged into this port never take this long be it another sata ssd that often takes around 8 to 15 seconds worst case..and usb thumb drives that often show up within 5 seconds or less.

Weird.... Jan 15 17:03:31 tpcs kernel: [ 3197.965363] ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300) does that mean the connection link is only 1.5Gbps aka around 160 to 180 Megabytes per second? I"m going to try another cable.

Tried a Starlink certified usb 3.1 gen 2 sata to usb cable...same results 48 seconds

Now going to try a different port. a rear usb 3.2 port

-- slightly faster to show up. around 34 seconds..but still..uug.

I think it's this drive and how it's built...it's controller...everything. Unless someone has any other things I can try and check..I'll just marked this solved and get over the long time it takes ( plug it in..make some hot chocolate xD )

Cheers.

Yeah, I guess so. All of mine say 6.0 Gbps. But that is unrelated to your very slow drive recognition. Most of my USB external drives are recognized in 2 - 5 seconds. But I have seen it take longer (10 - 15 seconds) in rare cases.
