Grub customizer error [SOLVED]

Post by Spiderspoon »

I am using an old ASUS laptop and have dual boot Linux Mint Xfce and MATE, both 21.

I installed Grub customizer mainly to be able to edit the text of the grub screen. I recognise that are some members of this forum who recommend against this program. I'm open to comments either way.

When doing an update in MATE, I have been getting the following error:

Code: Select all

W:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/danielrichter2007/grub-customizer/ubuntu/dists/jammy/InRelease
: Key is stored in legacy trusted.gpg keyring (/etc/apt/trusted.gpg),
see the DEPRECATION section in apt-key(8) for details.
I added some carriage returns mainly so I would have the URL on one line, so I could look at that in a browser. I will repeat that line here for your convenience:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/danielrichter2 ... /InRelease

What does this mean, and what do I do with it?

Thanks.

W means Warning. It is not an error.

Please see this tutorial How to fix - Warning: apt-key is deprecated (in Linux Mint 21 and Ubuntu 22.04) to address it.

That warning is caused by apt-key command being deprecated. It's trying to store the authentication key in the default place (/etc/apt/trusted.gpg) which won't be used after Mint 21.

P.S. Since you asked, Grub Customizer creates a mess with the default Grub files. It's extremely difficult to undo the effects that it causes. Plus, I don't think it's been updated for a while.

In my opinion, Grub Customizer is not worth using to change something that you're going to look at for a few seconds.

There are ways to change text size, colors, and background through the Grub file which is much safer.

Thanks. You say it is not an error, but the message is an error message with a warning. It says:

Code: Select all

! An error occurred
The following details are provided:
W: http://ppa.launchpad.net/danielrichter2007/grub-customizer/ubuntu/dists/jammy/InRelease: Key is stored in legacy trusted.gpg keyring (/etc/apt/trusted.gpg), see the DEPRECATION section in apt-key(8) for details.
So I clicked on the link you provided and made the change for just the Grub Customizer. I did not do them all. That brought up another error, which I did not record. But what I did was revert, using Timeshift, to before I installed Grub Customizer. This did not remove all the effects of Grub Customizer. What it did do though is revert the grub menu to how it was before. I'll deal with that separately.

I am back to the same error/warning. This occurs when I refresh in Update Manager. Update Manager still works though.

Now if I have another go at fixing this using that link, should I fix all the issues? I have that link now in another tab, so I can look at it and ask you a question: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=377591. When I did

Code: Select all

sudo apt-key list
there were a few items. In that post, Qapla says to
Next, go into /etc/apt/sources.list.d and edit each of the PPA .list files.
So should I do all of them? The others aren't causing any problem.

Code: Select all

for the splash image copy a .png image in /boot/grub

Code: Select all

sudo cp /path/of/image.png /boot/grub
for the size of fonts change this line in /etc/default/grub

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/default/grub
remove the # and change the resolution

Code: Select all

#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480
for the color, modify the file /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme
replacing these

Code: Select all

if [ -z "${2}" ] && [ -z "${3}" ]; then
	          echo "  true"
	fi
with this, it's an example of color

Code: Select all

if [ -z "${2}" ] && [ -z "${3}" ]; then
		#echo "  true"
echo " set color_highlight=yellow/light-green"
echo " set color_highlight=red/black"
fi
these are the supported colors
black
blue
green
cyan
red
magenta
brown
light-gray
dark-gray
light-blue
light-green
light-cyan
light-red
light-magenta
yellow

after each change do an update-grub

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub

Colors can be changed in the /etc/default/grub file. I'll have to look into my notes on that.

Olaf2020 described how to change the background image and the text size (by decreasing the resolution). You can get the resolutions for your display by booting to Grub, then press "C" to get to the grub menu. Type either "vbeinfo" or "videoinfo" and it will show you what resolutions you can use for GRUB_GFXMODE=

I can not see your screen, so I can only make comments on what you post. In your first post there is nothing which says there is an error.

In this post it says an error occurred, but the developer does not provide any information about what the error might be. What is listed is a warning and not an error. You would have to contact the developer to get more information about what that means. They didn't really explain much.

If you do not record the error, there is no way anyone can help you with it. There are thousands of possible error messages so we need details to be able to help.

I am surprised to hear that, but I have heard others say the only really good way to remove Grub Customizer is to do a fresh install. Maybe something from this topic can help you How to Unwind Grub Customizer.
Spiderspoon wrote: Fri Dec 02, 2022 12:11 amI am back to the same error/warning. This occurs when I refresh in Update Manager. Update Manager still works though.
That's because it is a warning. Warnings do not stop the process from completing. Errors will stop the process from completing.

The warning message must be fixed before you upgrade to Linux Mint 22. Until then, you can continue to run with that message and the process will complete.

Pjotr: editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom is covered well in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDf_fRAophc

On this laptop I have mint MATE and used to have Cinnamon. I replaced Cinnamon with Xfce, but the grub menu still says Cinnamon. When I click on Cinnamon in grub, it loads Xfce. So I will want to edit grub to change Cinnamon to Xfce.

I am also interested in having the last used distro highlighted on reboot. Grub Customizer does this, so there must be a way of editing grub to do this. This is handy for when you want to use the same distro repeatedly.

I am not fussed about the appearance of grub at this stage.

I move in this way to change the name displayed in grub, edit the /etc/lsb-release file like this, for example

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/default/grub
and change the name here

Code: Select all

DISTRIB_ID=LinuxMint
DISTRIB_RELEASE=21
DISTRIB_CODENAME=vanessa
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Linux Mint 21 Vanessa"
and change this line for example

Code: Select all

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Linux Mint 21 Vanessa XFCE"
then change in this file

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/default/grub
the line

Code: Select all

GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
in

Code: Select all

GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -d -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
changing the -i with a -d
and at the end of all i make an update grub

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
this must be done on every distros

if you want to boot the last used system by default, go to the main system and change this line to /etc/default/grub

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/default/grub
and change

Code: Select all

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
to

Code: Select all

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
and add the line

Code: Select all

GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT="true"
and make a grub update

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
I haven't used this method in a long time, but I think it's always valid, it's always grub2

If you'd like an interesting Grub menu, there's grub2-theme-mint. I got the idea from Pjotr.

According to Synaptic Package Manager, it installs the following file/(sub)directories:

My original problem is solved and we have moved over to how to edit grub, so I've opened a new topic at Edit GRUB
posting.php?f=46&mode=post&d=25974
I think we should continue that discussion on that topic. Meanwhile I will go back and review your answers on this topic. I will not reply here now, but on the other topic.

this must be done on every distros

...
OK, I am looking at /etc/default/grub, but I am currently working in MATE. I have no DISTRIB lines in my grub file. Is there a different grub file in each distro? I will have a look now. I just looked in the Xfce grub file, as I can access it within MATE, and it is different to the one in MATE. I think the one in Xfce doesn't get used.

I don't think grub is getting the name for Xfce from the /etc/default/grub file. I think it's getting it from os-prober. Maybe the DISTRIB lines will overrule that naming. What do you think? I don't want to add extra lines to my grub menu.
