Firefox doesn't appear after first click on link

Post by Trik16 »

Hi!

I'm using firefox on linux mint 21 with cinnamon. It works fine as always but I have this minor and annoying problem with the click on links.

Every time I click on a link from an external application firefox open a new tab/window with but doesn't show me the browser. To do that I have to click a second time on the hyperlink and at this point firefox will appear with 2 identical tabs opened.

To avoid that I have to click once and search myself the browser window.

Every time I click on a link from an external application firefox open a new tab/window
That is not the expected behavior, though I have seen sites that do that. I would expect it to simply replace the current page with the new one, unless you right click and Open in new tab or Open in new window.

What is the external application?
How did you install Firefox?

Also, with a 6000 series Ryzen, I would recommend using the 6.0-oem kernel. You can install the latest 6.0-oem kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04b
and reboot or you can install if from Synaptic Package Manager.

Slack, VS Code, Obsidian are the apps that I use more. Your suggestion give me an idea and I tested also some links that appears on system applications like package manager or system information to generate the detailed sys info that I posted here... And these two work properly

Firefox is the default browser for Mint, I already found on the OS and I've updated from the package manager.

I will try the kernel 6

I use LM 20.3. When I am viewing Slack in my FF browser and I click on a link it opens a new tab next to the Slack tab and makes that new tab active, so I see the content. I don't know why yours is not working that way.

I was not expecting the newer kernel to fix this particular issue. I just meant in general it would likely be a better match for your hardware because your hardware is so new.

Now if you mean it didn't work because you had problems with the kernel, then switch back to the 5.15 until the 5.19 becomes available in Update Manager.

I do not use the apps you mention so I defer to others who do to be able to help. Maybe it is not so much that you have to click twice is that the first click is very slow to happen and by the time it would happen anyway is when you do the second click? (Just a guess.)

I'm talking about Slack and VS Code applications, external to the browser. Inside the browser everything works fine. When I click on a link from other apps firefox open the link but the browser window does not appear in the foreground on the desktop, I have to go and find it manually or, alternatively, I can click a second time and at that point the browser window is brought to the foreground but there are two identical tabs open so I must close one.

I've already tried this one and doesn't seems to be the problem.

I wonder if you are running into an issue with the Grouped Windows List applet. See [BUG] Grouped Window List not showing open programs #11106 . There were some fixes put in place as mentioned in that thread, but the issue is not completely resolved for everyone.

I had also this one right after the installation! But the first urgent updates fixed that

There is a way to understand better what is appening into the system? Some logs or anything else that I can share?
if there is no way to fix that for now at least I can provide useful information to the dev community.

The info in the bug report mentions checking ~/.xsession-errors file which is a hidden file in your home directory. One is created for each login session. You could check it after you make your attempts to open Firefox to see if anything is recorded.

The other place to perhaps check is the log file for your application (Slack or VSCode) to see what it might mention.

You would have to provide information on a bug report to get information to the dev community. The devs do not typically check the forum.

Let's see if either of those log places turn up any information which might give clues as to what is happening.

I opened just after replicating the error. Look at the last line:

About that... I investigated a lot the system journal but I didn't find anything specific about the apps

I meant to check for logs in the app itself. Many apps create their own log files which are separate from the system logs.

I do not know the specific window it is referencing, but if it is Slack or VSCode, then it would seem they were not written according to the standard. If I am reading that line correctly then it would seem to be a problem in the app and not the operating system (but I am not familiar enough with that code to confirm if I am reading the line correctly).

It is a normal message when attempting to open the same application window twice. You can quickly click Firefox launcher two times in a row to get this message.

How many seconds you are waiting till doing second click? What happens when you wait 60 seconds before second click?

I cannot wait more than 10 seconds if I want to be redirected automatically to the browser window. Otherwise when I click simply I'm not redirected but the tab in the browser is opened. If I wait more than 10 seconds and then I click again another tab is opened identical to the first-one but I'm not redirected to it.

Which app?

Did you click twice when producing the output you posted? If so, it does not seem the software saw both clicks?
