Firefox crashes, then other software - NVIDIA issue? Hardware failure?

Post by Kefren »

[Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon 5.0.7 / Firefox 107.0.1 (64-bit)]

Firefox has been fine for over a year, but recently (maybe in the last few days) it has been crashing a lot - sometimes almost continuously. As soon as I restore a tab or the browser, it crashes again. It's becoming almost unusable. The problem isn't limited to just one site, seems to do it on almost anything.
Screenshot from 2022-12-02 16-54-04.png
I haven't installed any new themes or extensions for ages. I turned Troubleshooting Mode on but it still crashes. I turned off Hardware Acceleration but it still crashes (well, it seemed to freeze up completely once a few tabs were open).

So, I installed both Opera and Vivaldi. However, they do the same - tabs crashing randomly. That is likely to be a clue.

To top it all, in the last half hour Thunderbird has begun crashing. The same Mozilla crash report box pops up (though I thought Thunderbird was now independent of Mozilla?)

So, is there anything obvious? Any known issues? Linux Mint is fully up to date according to Update Manager. Firefox and Thunderbird were the default Linux Mint versions.

Any thoughts?

System info below. Thanks!

Re: Firefox (and other browsers) now crash all the time

Can you get 4.5 hours of run with FF and TB running? Note the inxi you reported shows 4.5 hours of uptime.
Info: Processes: 331 Uptime: 4h 30m
I was going to suggest you do some testing by not starting FF or TB, but start other apps. Does it still crash?

You could also disconnect that 4TB spinning drive, but I suspect that is not the problem.

I once had a similar problem with a relative's Windows machine.
Turned out that the USB hard disk that he used for backups had become faulty and was locking up Windows.

So as someone else suggested you could try testing with the hard disk drive disconnected, just in case.

That time might be when I wasn't running them much, or the PC was just on with them closed, or I was playing games - no idea what that means, I'm afraid! Usually I just open TB or FF when I need it, then close it.

Sometimes Hereoes of Might and Magic 3 hangs, but I just assume it's because it is an old game written for Windows - I'm amazed it runs at all on Linux! I had a few hangs playing Total Chaos (a standalone Doom2 mod via flatpak) but I think that had stability issues anyway. There are other programs that never crash, however long I use them for - Gimp, Universe Sandbox, Abyss Odyssey and so on. So I have only seen this crash with FF and TB, and some hangs on a few old or fan-made games (usually modern ones are fine).

The 4TB drive is my internal data drive - so my desktop is stored on that. I could probably work out how to open the PC and disconnect it but I'm not super confident with hardware, and I'd probably have to make changes first. Plus, testing Linux would then be tricky, as I'd have no access to my files, so have little I could do on my PC.

It is a possibility. I don't mind, though it usually takes me a day to reinstall an OS, restore all my program settings etc. If there was a cause of this issue I'd fell more confident if I could identify and fix it, in case it happened again after reinstalling!

I do have a USB HDD for backups but I only attach it to the PC during a backup - it hasn't been plugged in for a week, and the crashes began only a few days ago. My 4TB HDD is the internal data HDD.

Additional info:

Last night I tried watching a film on a streaming service (my desktop PC also connects to my TV via HDMI). I'd say the tab crashed every 5-10 minutes and needed restoring. Roughly every fourth time the whole browser crashed and had to be restored.

Also, I just got this error on trying to update the OS. I first got it recently and have seen it a couple of times since. It sometimes gets me to run another command. It stems back to then Linux Mint installed the "recommended" Nvidia open driver a week or so ago, and then wouldn't boot to the OS. I had to mess around for a few hours until I found some kind of safe mode where I could revert to the proprietary Nvidia driver. Then it worked fine. But there's a chance that might tie in (I forgot about it until I did this update just now).
Screenshot from 2022-12-03 08-27-43.png
I also had Cinnamon itself crash once, and have been getting this error on opening Libre Office Writer documents sometimes (then it immediately fixes itself when I try again):

Mmm. I have more suspicions that it relates to something to do with the Nvidia issue recently.

Some of the Linux updates seem to fail with errors like this:
Screenshot from 2022-12-03 10-04-05.jpg
When I run that command, I get some errors in the output:

Seems to be Nvidia issues?

In the last hour, whenever I reboot it says this:
Screenshot from 2022-12-03 10-06-11.png
However, it wasn't letting me actually revert to an older Nvidia driver or change it, and now it won't even load anything, just shows this:
Screenshot from 2022-12-03 10-11-11.png
So: is there some simple way to maybe strip out the Nvidia driver completely and reinstall it? Maybe that ties in to the issue.

Or it may be that and some other failed Linux update.

My last resort is to reinstall Mint, maybe go for the latest version. I''ll have to research procedures for properly clearing the old version and grub menu so they can be redone (I have a dual boot with Win10 - which I hardly use - so things are slightly more complicated).

I tried to install a .deb file but got an error telling me to run a fix command, and when I do, it just does this:
Screenshot from 2022-12-03 10-26-40.jpg
I tried leaving it for hours, but it just keeps repeating the "timout" and try again messages. So I think it might be stuck in a loop. I can't seem to end the process except by rebooting, but then it will have the same errors about broken packages.

I wish I'd never clicked on the "recommended" Linux Mint Nvidia driver, everything was fine until then! But so many people say "have you isntalled the latest drivers?" when there are problems that I do update them sometimes. :-(

Anyway, Linux seems to have switched to this:
Screenshot from 2022-12-03 11-20-08.png
If I try to change it to anything else, it gets to work, but ends up with this:
Screenshot from 2022-12-03 11-19-43.png
So it does look like one of the things that may need fixing is some way of completely removing all Nvidia driver stuff so it can start again. But the processes for changing or removing it are getting stuck.

It is possible all the Nvidia-520-open driver packages did not remove. I recently had to help someone where we found that to be the case.

Did you just use Driver Manager to revert to the proprietary driver?
Remove all nvidia packages by running

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge *nvidia*
then reboot using either nomodeset or by booting to the grub menu and using a kernel with recovery mode.
Then see if Driver Manager will let you install a driver (without open in the name).

If Driver Manager will not let you do that, then try doing it from the command line with

Code: Select all

apt install nvidia-driver-515
I can not tell from your screenshot if the 525 driver (not the open one) is available on the list which is why I said to use 515. If you know the 525 without open in the name is on the list then just swap out that number at the end of the command. I suspect even if you install 515, Update Manager will give you the option to upgrade to the 525 anyhow so it probably would not matter.

If you run into any error messages when using the above commands, post all of the output you get.

Thanks - in future that will be an option. In this case I only have one Timeshift, from after the Nvidia open driver issue that stopped Linux booting, so any instabilities it introduced would be in the Timeshift. I'd never used it before, and unfortunately my first experience of Timeshift was less than perfect! Someone recommended saving them to USB sticks (in case of SSD failure), so I got a new large one, but Timeshift never completed copying files to it even when I left it for hours, it just seemd to hang. Whereas it only took second to do a full first backup to HDD. Also, some of the times it didn't add a restore option to the menu, even though if I browsed files I could see that it had done them. I decided not to trust it too much for critical things, and stick to my main system - desktop and personal data on a separate internal drive, regularly backed up to external HDD, so even if my PC blew up I could reinstall an OS on something and not have lost anything important to me. (And I could access my files on another PC, as long as I booted it into a live Linux so it could read ext4).

Did you just use Driver Manager to revert to the proprietary driver?
I think so, though I have done so many things recently (usually at the OS promting me to run some kind of fixing command in a terminal) that I've sort fo lost track of what each thing was.

Will do, thanks. And if it fails, I guess I'll reinstall Linux entirely, see if that helps (which could rule out or point to hardware issues). I'll have to find a tutorial on reinstalling Linux on a dual-boot PC - it was probably simpler when I first did it as I put Windows on one SSD, Linux on the other, and Linux then created the grub menu (somewhere). But now my drives have partitions I didn't put, so it's not clear whether I destroy them all on the Linux SSD and reinstall, or whether some need to be left as they are (e.g. the EFI one) and only some deleted. It would be the first time I've tried to remove Linux, put a fresh install on (the latest version of Cinammon, 21), and nto break Windows! :-)

UPDATE: done the first bit. Seemed to work.

[I tried pasting in the results but the forum says it is too many characters.] I'll now do a quick bit of research on what the nomodeset or recovery mode options are.

(LATER) Okay, on boot I pressed e, entered nomodeset, ctrl-x. Then when it got to Linux it said I had no driver so was in hardware mode. All fine. I chose the 525 Nvidia driver and it began installing, but ended with this:
Screenshot from 2022-12-04 09-59-01.png
So I'm wondering if just reinstalling Linux might be easier; or, worryingly, if there is a hardware issue? Also, do I need to repeat the process and remove the nomodeset word, or does it just apply the one time? Cheers!

UPDATE: Whoops! Next time I rebooted, I had no display. Basically, after the boot menu it booted into Linux, but the monitor said "no display" and went to sleep. I heard the Linux desktop load (two notes) and could remember the keyboard shortcut to reboot. Same thing. This time I repeated "nomodeset" (it had disappeared, as I'd hoped - though it is VERY slow adding that word, as the cursor moves about once every second, and I have to take ti right down and across the file to get to the bit where I need to add nomodeset!) and it let me get back into Linux, with the missing driver error. But when I tried to install 515 instead of 525, same error. I am currently trying the 510, to see if that will install.

So I'm wondering if just reinstalling Linux might be easier;
I would just reinstall. and see if this still happens. reinstalling cost you like 5-10 min. updating 5-10. setting everything up incl software installing 1h. thats a total of 1,5 to 2h. searching this problem cost you days. but i understand that you are interested to find the failure. but sometimes things just needs to be accepted and go forward.
I think you are right. :-)
The system is getting more flaky. Libreoffice Writer crashes, Cinnamon crashes. I used the USB writer to create a USB of Mint 21 but it hangs at about 30%. Installed Popsicle, but it fails to load. So I have gone on my girlfriend's Windows laptop, downloaded Mint iso there, also Rufus, and made a bootable USB with it. Almost read to go.

Now, as a dual boot, I know I will need to use the "other" option when installing Mint 21, but I have a question. I built this PC specifically to make dual boot easier. It has a 4TB HDD in two partitions. One 2TB NTFS, which Windows uses as my data drive and desktop storage (all the things I back up). The other 2TB is ext4 and my Linux data and desktop. (I don't use My Documents or Home to store anything). So that will be excluded from the process, and when Mint is reinstalled I can just point the desktop there, voila.

I have a 256GB SSD for Win 10 and a 512GB SSD for Linux.

When I view the Linux SSED in Disks or Gparted, it has two partitions. One is the main one for Linux OS filling most of the disk. Obviously that will get erased as part of the Mint 21 install. However, there is also a small Fat32 partition called "EFI system" "Mounted at /boot/efi". My guess is that's where the boot menu goes so I can pick between Linux and Windows. Now, since I never manually put it there, I am guessing Linux did - part of when ti realised I had Windows installed and asked if I wanted to dual boot. I will have said yes, so then maybe Linux built it.

My question is, when I install the new Linux, am I best deleting both partitions on the SSD (on the assumption that if I leave the old EFI partition it might confuse things, ending up with two, or with refs to Linux 20.2)? I am hoping that yes, I can basically erase the 512GB SSD so it is one empty partition; Linux 21 will install itself, and make a new EFI menu option for the dual boot. However, if I need to leave that EFI partition alone, please let me know. :-)

UPDATE: This is weird. In the past, if I booted from a Linux Mint bootable iso USB, I could always then go into the live version os Linux. (And use it a bit, then choose to install if I wanted.) However, when I did it with the Mint 21 Cinnamon USB I just made, if I go into the live version then the monitor turns off, saying no signal (even though I hear it get to a desktop). Whereas if I choose the "compatibility mode" option, it does get to the desktop and display it, no monitor turn off. Tested it twice, both options, same thing. So I guess it is worrying that a version of Mint running off the USB can't display a desktop unless I choose compatibility mode, whereas that never used to be an issue in the past. Is there something very different about Mint 21 from 20.2? Is the live USB version somehow being affected by the Nvidia issue on the installed SSD version of Mint I am typing into at present? Is it indicating some other issue? I'm pretty stressed about all this at the moment!

Thanks - in future that will be an option. In this case I only have one Timeshift, from after the Nvidia open driver issue that stopped Linux booting, so any instabilities it introduced would be in the Timeshift.
For a guy who wants to get to the bottom of everything, it appears to me you are letting a little piece of that to get away. Yes, I understand the snapshot is after the new nvidia driver was selected.

Since Linux now seems to crash a process every few minutes (a tab, Thunderbird, Cinnamon etc) I really want to just try reinstalling it. All the routes I get led down seem to fail. So every time it boots now it tells me there is no driver installed. It tells me to open driver manager, but that shows no errors (currently says I have the 510 drivers and " proprietary driver in use"). Since it told me I have to pick one before that popped up, I tried the 515, which used to work, but then it gives this error in the top window. When I follow the instructions in the terminal below, it never completes, even if I leave it for hours. So eventually I reboot.

As such, I want to do the reinstall. Please can someoen help my with these two questions?

1. I just don't want to install Mint 21 from the USB in compatibility mode, only for it to then boot to a desktop I can't see, meaning no easy way to fix it or get help.

Those appear to be all package related errors. They can be quite tedious to clear, but I have helped others clear them and get their system working.

This is really starting to really sound like a hardware issue. Especially with the below:

If you have an HDMI connection, remove and securely re-attach both ends of the cable. It's also possible this problem may be a GPU-related issue.

Do not worry about installing until you can get the live session working properly.

And please do not copy and paste in new posts what you have already written in prior posts. If you want advice on installing, create a new topic in the Installation & Boot section of the forum. Those questions are not Software & Applications questions.

Okay, I turned it off, disconnected the Displayport and HDMI cables at both ends (TV/Monitor and 3060Ti). Also checked that the things in the desktop seem securely in place. All was good.

Turned it all back on. Seems to be the same. The Live distro again had no display when I chose Mint 21; but if I chose the compatibility mode, it took me to a desktop.

Apologies. I suppose a part of me thought that the issues with installing might be related to the issues above and it would be easier to keep it together. Though the EFI question should definitely have gone elsewhere, so I'll do that now. It's probably a straightforward yes/no question for someone!

Whereas the issue of why the Live USB isn't giving sending anything to the monitor (but compatibility mode is) needs fixing, as you say, before I install. Should I make a separate post for that?

Many thanks!

But in the past starting in regular mode did give you a desktop? (That's what I understood you to say, but maybe I read you incorrectly.)

It is odd at relatively all at once everything is wrong.

Are you running the most recent BIOS/UEFI for your computer?

And when you switch to run Windows everything is okay?

I have been repairing my own PCs since the days of Windows 3.1. As SMG has already stated this is beginning to look a lot like some kind of hardware failure. Sometimes instead of major failure they start out with occasional glitches but then keep getting worse. Since the problems seem to be snowballing for the OP I think it is time for a complete hardware diagnostic before going any further. Many Motherboard makers have an onboard full hardware diagnostics testing that can be run from BIOS. Or can be downloaded from their websites. I highly suggest running that test if available. About a year ago I started experiencing random crashes. That problem was eventually traced to a failing HDD. Then about 6 months ago the same kind of problems on a different PC which also was caused by a failing HDD. I agree with SMG that these problems seem to be more likely to be related to the GPU but until a full diagnostic test is run there is no way to know for sure.
