what's with all the grub updates ?

Post by iliketrains »

Update manager is listing updates for grub2, grub2-signed and grub2-unsigned.
Should I just accept all 3 and don't worry ?
I can't remember seeing anything like this in previous updates.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

See here on how to lock GRUB etc.

Click the changelog tab in the lower section of Update Manager to see what the changes are. I have an older computer so I didn't get three, but some of the changes looked like positive ones to me.

Hello ! And I just got a new kernel update with no changelog ?!
Is this secure ? I've never seen a kernel update with no changelog before ?
On 20.3 Cinnamon.

Cheers !
PS Didn't know where to post this, and I got the updates to Grub too like the original posters here !

Hi SMG,
Hope all is well with you.
I know that these forums only hold problems - so that is all I've seen - the (allbeit) rare GRUB update going wrong.
Along with Timeshift there shouldn't be a problem - or if there is a problem it should be fixed easily.
What positive changes did you see?

I've never seen a kernel with a changelog in Update Manager. I've always gone to Changelogs Pool and then clicked the new kernel version and then clicked on the changelog to see the changes.

I do not know what are in the other ones, but this file was last updated in August so it's been a while since it changed.

Whoa ! Good to hear that you've never seen them in Update Manager !
I could have sworn I used to check them when I updated kernels - to see what was in there,
might be a new thing now as I just recently updated this machine to 20.x - I was on 19.x before !
Oddly enough I got a new update message for an update to the 5.15 kernel too right away as I had put it in now and rebooted !
(I had put off upgrading to the latest available kernel.)
 hope its all ok !
EDIT: whoa there is a changelog on the 5.15 update !
that is : linux-generic-hwe-20.04 / top line in changelog is : linux-meta-hwe-5.15 (5.15.0.58.64~20.04.24) focal; urgency=medium

For anyone wondering how this ended....
Mint Update has never let me down* so I let it have it's way with no obvious bad result.
grub2-unsigned is described as a container for.... something.

*except for that time an update broke Update itself.

Yes that is chances are the case as long as ...you did left the Timeshift's settings on their defaults ( as in don't check any additional stuff) and target a separate drive for the Snapshot creations..when you made any

Go ahead and create a Timeshift snapshot after you confirmed the Timeshift settings are defaults...just in case. ;) Last time I had a problem with a grub update it was during either Mint 19 or 18 sincerely.

Yes - rarely have problems with updates - but unless it is a Grub security update for remote attacks, it won't be an improvement for me personally so no point in
me doing it.
Will be different for you though.

A bit wary about Grub updates in case of some kind of boot hijacking ... :-O

The last part is the ideal situation, but snapshots can still save your rear end in the majority of cases, even if they are on the same drive. If the system is unbootable, you can boot from an installation medium and run Timeshift on that, then browse to your saved snapshots.

Well,
perhaps I have been "too trustful" but Update Manager has never crashed my system.

I run Timeshift with 5 dailys and therefore, never worry about updates.

and my log shows

Even if the update contained malware how would you recognise it? Either you trust the updates or you stop using the computer.
