Linux Mint freezing every couple of seconds

Post by mksh21 »

One every minute I notice that the whole system just freezes for 3 seconds. Its not my laptop, all temps are good. The hardware is ok. I tested out quite a number of official and non-official kernels such as xanmod and liquorix, they make 0 difference.

Re: Linux Mint freezing every couple of seconds

mksh21 wrote: Fri Jan 27, 2023 11:19 am One every minute I notice that the whole system just freezes for 3 seconds. Its not my laptop, all temps are good. The hardware is ok. I tested out quite a number of official and non-official kernels such as xanmod and liquorix, they make 0 difference.
The first rule of troubleshooting is to minimize the variables and make changes one at a time. You have so many variables in your install that I wouldn't know where would be the first place to look.

Linux Mint supports three desktop environments, Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce. You have none of those. Which one of those did you install as a starting point?

Linux Mint comes with Mesa 22.0.5. You have that plus kisak and oibaf and xanmod (below the repos listed) currently on your install. They could be interfering with each other.

Code: Select all

repos:
  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kisak-kisak-mesa-jammy.list
    1: deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/kisak-kisak-mesa-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/kisak/kisak-mesa/ubuntu jammy main
    2: deb-src [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/kisak-kisak-mesa-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/kisak/kisak-mesa/ubuntu jammy main
  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/oibaf-graphics-drivers-jammy.list
    1: deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/oibaf-graphics-drivers-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/oibaf/graphics-drivers/ubuntu jammy main
    2: deb-src [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/oibaf-graphics-drivers-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/oibaf/graphics-drivers/ubuntu jammy main
OpenGL:
renderer: RENOIR (renoir LLVM 15.0.3 DRM 3.49 6.1.8-x64v3-xanmod1)
v: 4.6 Mesa 22.3.0-devel direct render: Yes

Then you tell us you tried different kernels. The xanmod1 kernel is more than just a kernel so leaving all the rest of the packages and kernel parameters on your system while you try "official" kernels is not a good test of the kernel. Official kernels are meant to be used with official installs and not a mksh21-special install.

This is showing as an active repo, yet you do not currently have the liquorix kernel active. Is any of that still on your system?

Code: Select all

  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/damentz-liquorix-jammy.list
    1: deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/damentz-liquorix-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/damentz/liquorix/ubuntu jammy main
    2: deb-src [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/damentz-liquorix-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/damentz/liquorix/ubuntu jammy main
Additionally, you have this repo which does not apply to your system's onboard graphics, in addition to the fact is for the wrong version of Linux Mint. Your version is jammy and not focal.

Code: Select all

  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/amdgpu.list
    1: deb https://repo.radeon.com/amdgpu/5.4.1/ubuntu focal main
These repos also do not apply to your onboard GPU.

Code: Select all

  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/graphics-drivers-ppa-jammy.list
    1: deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/graphics-drivers-ppa-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu jammy main
    2: deb-src [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/graphics-drivers-ppa-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu jammy main
 Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rocm.list
    1: deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.radeon.com/rocm/apt/5.4.1 focal main
My suggestion to you is to use Timeshift or some other backup philosophy and make your changes one at a time to test them to see what works best. Adding everything on top of each other like you have done makes troubleshooting nearly impossible to do.

This repo interacts with the graphics drivers and is known to cause issues when trying to suspend with AMD graphics.

Code: Select all

  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/slimbook-slimbook-jammy.list
    1: deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/slimbook-slimbook-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/slimbook/slimbook/ubuntu jammy main
    2: deb-src [arch=amd64 signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/slimbook-slimbook-jammy.gpg] https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/slimbook/slimbook/ubuntu jammy main

You are not using bionic or kinetic.

Code: Select all

  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq-bionic.sources
    1: deb [arch=amd64 i386] https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu bionic main
  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq-kinetic.sources
    1: deb [arch=amd64 i386] https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu kinetic main
I suggest you start with a fresh install of Linux Mint 21.1 Xfce. Do all the updates and make sure the system is working properly then take a Timeshift snapshot and label it "base system".

Next you can do all your desktop environment changes. Take another snapshot and label it 'LXDE base".

Then start your experimenting with the different Mesa versions and kernels. Do a xanmod experiement and after you have everything installed then take a snapshot labeled "xanmod". Then roll back to your "LXDE base" and then try the liquorix experiment and make a liquorix snapshot.

Or maybe you want to add your games first and have an "LXDE base + games" snapshot.

Timeshift gives you the option to label snapshots so you can switch back and forth as you are experimenting. That way you do not have files from one experiment interfering with the next.

If you approach your install and customizations that way, you will likely be able to find a good combination that works for your needs and does not freeze. Your current install is likely way too customized for anyone here to be able to help you guess what the underlying problem(s) are.

I guess one of the main pros of GNU/Linux, customization, is over-hyped and doesn't always tell the other side of trying to customize linux your own way...Guess will have to reinstall to XFCE as you said.

Are you just web browsing when the freezing happens? Or are you working with a specific application?

The freeze does not stop the computer, correct? By that I mean when the freeze is done the computer starts working again and you do not have to reboot to get it working again.

Are you running the most recent BIOS/UEFI for the computer?

Code: Select all

Machine:
Type: Laptop System: HP product: HP Laptop 15s-eq3xxx v: N/A
    serial: <superuser required> Chassis: type: 10 serial: <superuser required>

    v: F.10 date: 07/04/2022
Do you have any sensor applets installed? I've seen where they can cause micro-freezes.

What are you are doing/did you install to make the changes you describe in this post to adjust your CPUclock settings?

Freeze issues with Ryzen CPUs happened a lot in the early versions (1000 series and some 2000 series) and those issues were usually addressed with BIOS settings mentioned in this link Fix system freezing trouble with AMD Ryzen CPU's, but I don't know if those are still appropriate for a 5000 series.

Do you know if the computer was running properly in Windows? (ie. have you ruled out a hardware issue)

The whole computer freezes no matter what application I use or if Im idle right after boot. I dont have any sensor applets installed, I purposefully dont use them. Yes I am using the most recent BIOS.I installed corectrl to try and force higher clock speeds. The laptop works fine under windows.

You didn't add any sensors. You just added something so you could make changes to your CPU.

Did you add that before or after you noticed the freezes? corectrl is someone's add-on software and not part of the operating system. The idea is to get the operating system stable BEFORE you start adding other software. You need a stable base before you start making changes.
mksh21 wrote: Mon Jan 30, 2023 5:01 amThe laptop works fine under windows.
Your CPU was, in fact, designed to run on Windows so I would hope it runs well on Windows. HP designed the BIOS/UEFI settings so the laptop runs well on Windows. Operating systems run differently so optimizing on one system does not mean it runs well on another.

Normally, I would ask for logs to help, but with you tinkering with your install with corctrl that means I would have no idea if something relates to the operating system or to your tinkering.

I added the changes AFTER I noticed the freezing. So since I have tinkered and theres no chance of you figuring it out the problem....Should I just reinstall the OS again?

The system should not be freezing. Not every couple seconds nor every couple of minutes nor every couple of hours. The system should be able to run properly without you adding third party unapproved applications that have known downsides (even when a system is running properly before it is installed).

Does that mean you did not take a Timeshift snapshot? If so, then re-installing is the next option.

I did some searching and it is possible this might be the issue you are experiencing AMD Issues Fix and Workaround for Ryzen's fTPM Stuttering Issues. However, it appears the fix is with a BIOS/UEFI update.

When others have had stuttering issues, checking the System Monitor (Resources) tab usually shows it happening. In those cases, upgrading to a newer kernel cleared the issue, but if this is a firmware-related issue, that may not help.

I do see a firmware update for renoir in the kernel/git/firmware. Let's see if that helps.
  • Please go to index : kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git and download the latest firmware package linux-firmware-20230117.tar.gz into your Downloads directory.
  • Right-click the downloaded file and select "Extract here". That will create a directory named linux-firmware-20230117.
  • Open that directory in your file manager. In that directory, open a terminal and run the following lines one at a time.

    Code: Select all

    sudo cp -R * /lib/firmware/
    sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
  • Reboot the computer.
I suggest you take a Timeshift snapshot before making that change, but if you prefer to keep re-installing instead of taking snapshots, that is also your choice if this causes problems. You do not want corectrl on your system when testing this change. I did some reading on corectl and it had downsides which can cause problems (and I don't know how well or how easy it is to remove).

Unfortunately I do not create Timeshift snapshots as soon as I install the OS or install any program as I really would rather go for a complete reinstall rather than using backups at early stages of using the OS. I will try the firmware that you sent, thank you.

Should I be worried? Update manager did not show anything that I can update. sudo apt update && apt upgrade did not resolve this.

When you install, the operating system is not ready. You must run all the updates in Update Manager. Then the system is ready. That is the advantage to taking a Timeshift snapshot.

The warnings are not a problem. You have renoir and renoir is not in the list so you are not missing something your hardware needs.

And you keep adjusting the CPU with the software you have added?

I can see from the firmware data you posted you have several different kernels installed. Other than that, we have no idea what you are doing so saying "no matter what I do" without giving specifics of what you are doing means you want us to participate in a guessing game. Your issue is not a common problem. In fact, it is rather unusual.

Have you verified the problem does not happen when running Windows on that laptop? HP only supports Windows on it, and, unfortunately, I've helped people with HP laptops who ran into issues that were verified as problems on Windows as well and they ended up (under warranty) getting a replacement laptop.

I have verified that the issue also happens on windows. But whenever I stress test the laptop with the use of AIDA64 and OCCT, there are no stutters what so ever.
A thing that I want to mention, is that no matter if I start of fresh or not, people will still say that my system is bloated or that I should just stay to the default settings....That is not a solution to the problem. Im basically being told to just accept it and deal with it...

If an issue happens across multiple operating systems, then the issue is related to the hardware or BIOS/UEFI settings.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what that means related to the issue of the system freezing every couple of seconds. If the system freezes except when you stress-test it, then the system is still freezing. Freezing under no/low load can happen and it's often related to firmware/BIOS settings.

In order to find the root cause of the problem so a solution can be found, one has to do testing on the basics. Thinking you can skip the basics and accidentally stumble on the solution is a shot-in-the-dark. Maybe you will get lucky, but it is often faster to take a focused approach to trouble-shooting.

May I know who told you that I skip the basics? I have reinstalled Mint on multiple occasions and purposefully left it in a "clean" state. And even then people managed to call it bloated....somehow, that my main issue that even though all basics are done people still recommend the same thing over and over again.

Considering I have never used the term "bloated" to refer to an operating system install, I don't know what you are referencing. My comments relate to the posts you made in this topic.

If you are getting help in multiple places and not indicating in this topic that is what you are doing then I don't understand why you would think I should know what you have done and tried or what others have recommended.
