Veracrypt alternatives?

Post by Noobicus »

I am wanting to encrypt certain folders/files on my hard drive, but I can't get veracrypt to install for whatever reason. What are some alternatives to veracrypt? Are there any?

You could use ecryptfs for that. You can use that for home directory encryption; encrypting your entire home directory. That is an option the Linux Mint installer gives you. But you can also use it to encrypt a specific directory only. It doesn't have a GUI so you'll be on the terminal to get that to work.

Can I ask why you're not asking for help with getting VeraCrypt installed? You could use the unofficial PPA to install it. Or you could download the .deb file for your system from https://www.veracrypt.fr/en/Downloads.html and double-click it in your file manager to run the installer. For Linux Mint 21.x you would use the Ubuntu 22.04 download, for Linux Mint 20.x the Ubuntu 20.04.

Truecrypt ... if you don't feel concerned by a high security level against possible attackers
Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon - K 5.15 - Desktop - english

Nothing can support a recommendation to use an application declared by its developers unsafe. Retaining interface and user experience of TrueCrypt, VeraCrypt is not only free of TrueCrypt errors but is the most reliable encryption software.

VeraCrypt should work fine. if you are on Mint 21 series just install https://launchpad.net/veracrypt/trunk/1 ... -amd64.deb

I already did gpg check on that(shown below), so if the file I linked to above matches the following SHA-256 hash "0e477e3db627dec2caeacdaba58e7106fabb898bd78b828463844be7ab746bdd" that particular file is good.

Code: Select all

gpg: Signature made Wed 18 May 2022 06:13:22 PM EDT
gpg: using RSA key 5069A233D55A0EEB174A5FC3821ACD02680D16DE
gpg: Good signature from "VeraCrypt Team (2018 - Supersedes Key ID=0x54DDD393) <veracrypt@idrix.fr>" [unknown]
gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature!
gpg: There is no indication that the signature belongs to the owner.
Primary key fingerprint: 5069 A233 D55A 0EEB 174A 5FC3 821A CD02 680D 16DE
so while you won't get any updates installing from a '.deb' file it's probably not a big deal in most cases since I can't imagine there are any serious enough security flaws patched in newer versions that would effect the encrypted file it creates etc.
