CPU Time always at 99%?

Post by buddhaflow » Thu May 06, 2010 2:09 pm

I am having a funny problem with Mint9 RC AMD64 (first gen AMD64 chip).

The CPU time is almost always in the high 90s. Maybe it will drop as low as 80, but NEVER below that, even when I am not running any programs at all.

When I look at GNOME system monitor, AWN sysmon, or top - they all show no programs running. Maybe a couple things taking 10-20 percent.

I can't for the life of me find out what is taking up this 80-99%.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Please let me know if you need any more information, it's driving me crazy.

Thank you,
Sasha

Try the following in a terminal window:

Code: Select all

~$ sudo apt-get install htop
~$ htop
Use the > or < key and sort programs by CPU usage and you'll be able to see what is eating your resources. Maybe its just a bunch of 'smaller' programs that are using 10-20% that are adding up to %80-%90. Maybe you've found a real problem though.

In my past experiences, Mint (main branch/KDE) doesn't always get along well with older hardware. You might want to try a lighter version of Mint (Fluxbox, XFCE, LXDE).

Here's the result of htop.

I really think that this might be a bug in the system. Where do I go about reporting this thing, anyway? I know about launchpad, is there something similar for Mint?

I have XFCE installed on another partition, but the problem is I was having problems with AWN in it. I really love AWN, and haven't found anything equivelant that played nice with XFCE. I just upgraded my RAM hoping that would let me use Gnome/AWN, I'll be sad if it didn't work.
