Thunderbird 3 "timed out"

Dear all,
Can't get Thunderbird 3 to get my emails in Mint 9 (Isadora) at all.
Thunderbird 2 worked fine in Elyssa, but ...
- copying all from Thunderbird 2 didn't work (I think I know what I was doing)
- starting from scratch didn't work doesn't work from either of my 2 email servers
Always get:
"Connection to server ... timed out."
- installed Thunderbird 3 under Wine, but still cannot download emails (same, but just don't get a notification).
I also find I cannot run Linux Opera newer than v10.11 - it just doesn't find websites. I don't know if this is relevant.
I've swapped out everything but the CPU, and still get the same problems. Could it be the BIOS or CPU? I've been trying to get this to work for about 2 months now
Yes, I've checked email settings to exhaustion via support. One is gmail - which shouldn't be difficult.
I'd be very grateful for any ideas.
