Re: Sound recording software
Depends what you're trying to do..... Is it a fully fledged studio app you're after, or just an audio recorder?
Couple of things come to mind...
try this: http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org ... ?t=1260057
relates to Fruity Loops 9 (snag is, you need a licence key from Image-Line .It'll cost ya! depends how flush you're feeling, & you need wineasio for the driver. )
or alternatively, LMMS (FL studio clone- certainly the cheaper option.
Ardour is decent too. I Use that with my MPC!!
You'll need JACK for Ardour, though. (qjackctl in package manager)
Hope that helps.

Re: Sound recording software
Thanks for th info guys. At this stage I was hoping to stay with free software so I imagine Ardour would be my best bet.
I would like to setup a very basic home recording studio, just to record some of the music I have written. I sing and play the guitar so would probably also need to get my hands of some drum machine software in the future to add to the mix a little.
Does anyone have any suggestions on essential hardware (eg. Mircophones, etc.) which I would require in order to achieve this?
Should these types of questions be posted on a different forum?
Thanks

Glad to be of service!!
As far as mics go, anything that Shure sell is a good bet. try this: http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR78703
You'll need a usb soundcard (these days, most of them work with Mint), with a jack input for your mic.
Also consider a mixer, don't need go crazy, just enough for what your needs are.
In fact, http://www.htfr.com is probably as good as any site out there (they ship worldwide).
It'll give you a good idea of what you'll need. I would still consider LMMS (as it's free & nearly as good as Fruity) as a production environment, but Ardour is excellent too. It just means you have more choice.
Drum machines/samplers: Roland is your best bet. I have a SP404 sampler, cost me £250 from e-bay & is rock solid. Or consider the the Akai XR20, (same price) which has midi in/out/thru.
As far as drum machine software goes, Hydrogen is a good choice & comes with your standard TR808 & TR909 kits installed (you can get this through package manager, remember to install hydogen-drumkits too.) Or you could invest in a usb controller such as M-Audio Trigger Finger & assign midi samples to it.
Need any more help, let me know.
PS: If you're wondering, I don't work for HTFR, have bought quite a bit of product from them , & wouldn't hesitate to recommend them!!

You'll find some recording software here:

Re: Sound recording software
I could not find Ardour in my package manager. How do I go about obtaining it if it's not listed? Or am I just missing it somewhere in all that software?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Sound recording software
Just missing it I guess. In Synaptic Package Manager, with 'All' and 'Sections' highlighted in the left hand pane - Ardour is top of the list after entering ard (or Ard) in the search box.
Re: Sound recording software
I am new to using linux and it's taking me a little to get my head around it all. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread as you just saved me hours of headaches and mistakes.
Cheers!
