Skype: Others Can See My Cam, I Can't See Theirs (Solved?)

Post by red-e-made »

This only started happening a few days ago. Audio works fine with Skype 2.1 for Linux, and other people can see me, but I cannot see their webcams or see my preview. It's just a black screen.

I'm running an HP dv 6775, with a built-in webcam. Any ideas would be helpful.

And before anyone suggests it, yes, I did see this thread on Ubuntu's site.

EDIT: OK, I isolated the problem to my /home partition. Apparently Skype for Linux 2.1 video works only with the Nvidia 173 driver; not "common". So I just used this as an excuse to install Mint 10. Works now.

The really weird thing? My machine hates nvidia 173. It makes the config app crash if I try to make changes such as fixing the aspect ratio. However, with 173 already installed, I went ahead and installed nvidia common. Now both Skype and the nvidia config app work fine. Looking in Synaptic, both 173 and common are installed. I guess it's all in what order I install these drivers. Strange stuff, but hey, at least I have a solution now.
