Mint 10: double-clicking a .deb doesn't install it anymore

Post by rlindsey0 »

I'm sure there's a stupidly simple answer to this, i just don't know what it is.

It used to be that whenever I double-clicked on a downloaded .deb file, GDebi automatically installed it. Now, in Julia, that doesn't happen. Double-clicking just opens up the archive, without installing. Anybody know how I can switch back to the former behavior?

This isn't crippling, of course. I can still install the .deb by right-clicking and selecting the option to open and install with GDebi. But this seems to be a slightly clunkier way of doing what was previously simple and somewhat intuitive (like double-clicking an .exe in Windows), so it feels like a step back, if only a rather small one.

Anybody else encounter this altered behavior and know how to change it? Thanks.

Right-click the deb, go to Properties. Navigate to the Open With tab, and change the bubble to use gdebi instead of archive manager.

D'oh! Thanks, I knew that the answer would be simple and that I'd feel dumb when I heard it....

Right clicking on the .Deb package should Have 'Open with Gdebi' as an option also.

It does. The issue is just that the *default action* for a .deb (ie, to open it with GDebi) was changed, to something that IMO makes less sense. As proxima pointed out, the default can be changed back to the way it was in previous Mints; but it's unclear why this different default setting cropped up for the first time in Julia.

I don't know if it's a bug exactly; but it's hard to imagine that the devs would have made this change deliberately and considered it an improvement.
