[Solved] Firefox tabbed browsing issue

Postby tinny » Wed Nov 28, 2007 3:06 pm

There is a single browser tab in the Firefox browser. Clicking the FF icon to open another instance of FF (another tab) will cause the new tab to be superimposed over the single tab, and the original page will be unavailable/inaccessible until the new page or tab is closed. I expect the tabs to line up contiguously under the bookmarks or navigation toolbar, but no, just the single tab with the most recent instance of FF. It is almost impossible to multitask under this circumstance. I have fiddled with FF settings, but nothing seems to make it act normally.

Hm - I don't understand, maybe because it's late
Can you rephrase it?
Doesn't clicking the FF icon produce a new instance of FF?

Yes, clicking the FF icon causes a new (another) instance of FF, but the new instance substitutes itself into the tabular position of the original instance of FF, and the original becomes unavailable/inaccessible, until the new instance is closed. There is only a single tab on the FF browser, where one would expect there to be as many tabs as there are instances of FF. No, a single tab, which shows the most recent instance of FF. Earlier instances are not accessible or visible again, until the last instance of FF is closed. Whereupon, the next-to-last instance shows on the single tab.

there might be a hangup somewhere...
you can try the system monitor to see if there are unusual processes

I think this is a setting in FF somehow

This observation is further proof that something is amiss: When I reduce a window, it disappears forever, as if it had been quit. Not actually the same as if quit, because the page reduces to a point at the end of the panel. After being reduced from visibility, there is no way to retrieve it, and when FF is called again there is no evidence of the reduced instance of FF.

I have removed FF and completely removed FF, then reinstalled, but the condition persists.

Would anyone care to speculate whether reinstalling Mint Daryna would clear up Firefox. I would appreciate any advice.

EDIT: After wiping the hard drive, I reinstalled Mint Daryna, with good results as far as Firefox is concerned. The instances of Firefox appear on the panel, not as tabs under the toolbars like the first install. So I guess I should have formatted/wiped the drive before I installed Mint since it originally ran Debian Etch.
