APTonCD can't restore .iso

Post by poodle » Wed Aug 24, 2011 11:40 am

Dear all,

I recently had to reinstall my system and wanted to import my APT backup .iso made with APTonCD. I can't finde a way to make APTonCD use the .iso when it's not burned on a CD/DVD. I tried to trick it into believing it was a real CD in every way I knew. What should I do?

Research on the net delivered me this screenshot:

Which implies that the function to import from a .iso should be present. Mine however looks like this:

And when I click on "Restore" I only have the option to add a CD/DVD, which doesn't work.

What have you already tried, before we start suggesting things you already tried... And what Linux Mint version and desktop are you using?

I mounted the .iso to /media/apt, where the app would search normally, mounted it on /media/cdrom. Tried to manually add the .iso to the repos, which gave an error. Tried some other things from the IRC too, but to no effect.

Try mounting the .iso file (CD image) under the loop file option; this guide shows how
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-to-mo ... linux.html

Since that application is used for CD image files and is application driven, it may not offer any function that allows you to use it as a front end to ab .iso file that is not on a CD
http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/aptoncd
  • APTtoCD can load the .deb files from an actual CD that you have burned or from an ISO file located on another medium.
What is stopping you from resaving that .iso file to a CD ?

Yes that was how I did it, but no results...

Me not having a DVD at the place I'm located at this moment? :P Yes as weird as it may seem, in these times of USB sticks and internet, CD/DVD's just aren't in my arsenal.

Thanks for the help though, I'll wait until next week to burn a DVD.

Okay, UPDATE:

I got a DVD, burned it on very low speed and tried to import. APTonCD says there's no disk in the drive. Went to my LM 10 machine, same issue.
Apparently APTonCD is broken. The project's home page looks abandoned too and the download links are broken. I think APTonCD is dead.

I've found a just about usable solution here:

Looks like some dependency needed by APTonCD is not included in LM 12. Moreover, the APTonCD ui has changed a little bit.
I installed the "hal" package to solve this problem as suggested in http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 5&p=523614

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install hal
After installing this package, I restarted APTonCD and clicked the "Load" button. It now asked me whether I want to load from CD/DVD or from an iso image.

HI

i had the same problem

could not restore from an iso file . it seems it will only accept a burned cd .Even i did not have any dvd/cd to burn .

after searching from the net

found out this solution

For AptonCd to able to look for iso files.

we need to install Hal.

Without Hal you will only be able to locate a cdrom and not any iso file ..

plus

installing hal has been removed from synaptic. Meaning apparently not possible to install hal

but this is how we install Hal

Open terminal and paste the following

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mjblenner/ppa-hal

enter

sudo apt-get update

enter

sudo apt-get install hal

enter

once installation is finished

now try aptoncd
press load

and you will see the open file dialog box

locate your iso file

P.S .. Hal also solves some other unrelated problem coming from fluendo.
