I'm getting better at installing software from source instead of hunting for dodgy deb files on Google however one thing which always stumps me is how do you find out what dependencies the program needs? as more often then not I'm missing something

When running the "configure" script, you'll often get verbose output in the terminal. When the script fails, it'll tell you what library the app needs. Do to the variety of naming conventions used by different distros it usually helps to just to google the last couple of lines of output from the script.
