[SOLVED] SeaMonkey DEB for Linux Mint

Post by Ponny »

Hoy-hoy

Is there anybody who knows for repositorium called:
https://launchpad.net/~joe-nationnet/+ppa-packages?

The program SeaMonkey 2.4.1 is signed as "development" in this repositorium. But this is alredy finished version.
This is verry strange. SeaMonkey 2.4.1 for Windows and McIntosh is signed as final version in SeaMonkey homepage. But here is the same version signed as "development". But why the developers needs much more time to finish Linux version?
Believes this may seem a bit strange, as I would say well educated Englishman.

I visited the site and I think you just missed something.

Seamonkey Development - Ubuntu Version
Seamonkey Development (directs to one link) - Ubuntu Version(leads to another. THE ONE YOU WANT)

Also, they have:
SeaMonkey Stable - Ubuntu Version. Again, "Seamonkey Stable" is one link and "Ubuntu Version" links to another

Yes, I see. There is: "Seamonkey2 Stable - Ubuntu Lucid", for example.
I choose first link: Seamonkey2 Stable. But there is version 2.3.2. The old one. The last is 2.4.1. I don't understand: why is windows version finished (and Mac), but linux is pre-release?

I also am wondering why SeaMonkey is not being kept current in the repositories when FireFox and ThunderBird are being kept current. Going to the SeaMonkey project page I see linux builds being made available:

64-bit: http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla ... 64.tar.bz2

32-bit: http://download.mozilla.org/?product=se ... lang=en-US

So why are current SeaMonkey builds being added to the repositories?

A follow-up to my last post. It appears that SeaMonkey has been updated to 2.4.1 in the latest Ubuntu release. See this link:

http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/seamonkey

Can we get this into mint now?

Dave

PS: It appears the debs can be downloaded here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/seamonkey

Are there any limits to which mint releases these should be compatible with?

Yes, but Ubuntu 10.04 is LTS. It should be maintained until april 2013.
And also Mint 9. It's based on Ubuntu 10.04.

I am running Mint 8 on one system and Mint 11 on another. So I guess I am not going to be able to get a newer SeaMonkey on Mint 8 and will have to wait until I can upgrade that system. I gather that Mint 11 should eventually have the upgraded copy, I hope.

Regarding Ubuntu 10.04, checking at packages.ubuntu.com does not show the updated SeaMonkey yet. In fact only the oneiric and precise distributions have been updated. Is there someone we need to bug to get the update propagated back to the earlier distributions?

Dave

PS: I just became aware of a PPA offering SeaMonkey updates:

https://launchpad.net/~joe-nationnet/+a ... monkey-dev

I checked with the owner and he suggested backing up the .mozilla directory before updating from this source so it would be possible to restore it if things go bad. I am going to try it on one system and see how it goes.

I just added Joe Lesko's Seamonkey-dev PPA to my natty based system and upgraded to 2.4.1 there. Other than a few disabled add-ons it appears to have migrated from 2.0.13 without problems. If you have a supported release see his directions here:

https://launchpad.net/~joe-nationnet/+a ... monkey-dev

I hope this helps other SeaMonkey users get the current release up and running.

I have just added the PPA to my systems following the directions given. I now have 2.4.1 installed on both systems. The only issues I have encountered were with unsupported add-ons and add-ons that had to be manually upgraded as opposed to automatically updated with the transition from 2.0.13 to 2.4.1 here.

I am noticing 2.4.1 as overall faster than 2.0.13, but I am also noticing some changes I would like to undo. It seems as if the fonts being used in the UI, for tabs and in the mail/news menus, are larger than they were in 2.0.13 and I would like to shrink them. Unfortunately I don't know where that is set, any pointers?

Joe Lesko's Seamonkey-dev PPA has not yet updated to Seamonkey 2.7.1. Is this PPA still actively supported by Joe?

Never mind. I have done a manual upgrade using the .tar.bz2 from http://seamonkey-project.org and removed the PPA. Firefox has just done another upgrade so Seamonkey probably will be doing the same soon.

I sent Joe a message to see what was going on but have yet to receive a response. Given the release today of 2.7.2 perhaps that has something to do with it. I will wait and see if he updates to 2.7.2 instead.

Dave

PS: Confirmed. I just went to his page about the PPA and it shows he in the process of building 2.7.2 at this moment. So I anticipate an update available shortly.

That is the very reason I added Joe's PPA to my list for updates. If I had not I would still be at 2.0.13 as opposed to current with 2.7.2 today.

I have heard on themozilla.support.seamonkey newsgroup that Joe may no longer be updating his PPA. To quote the post:

If you are waiting for Joe, you may be waiting for quite some time. He
got frustrated with the 'team' and he's changed his workstations over to
Fedora. Recommend that you download directly from Mozilla and run in a
home folder.

Gary

I don't know if anyone can confirm or deny this, but I do see that he has yet to build 2.8 and make it available there. Of course there are still no updates on the ubuntu repositories, so once again there are blockages on the line to getting updates to SeaMonkey. Any suggestions?

I was wondering if we were going to get seamonkey 2.9 or 2.10 in linuxmint Maya. I had 2.9 running great in Mint12. Hope we get it soon because Seamonkey is my favorite browser. Any feed back is very much obliged.

You can have 2.9.1 installed now by following the directions here:

https://launchpad.net/~joe-nationnet/+a ... monkey-dev

Joe has been continuing to maintain this, but on a somewhat delayed schedule. So I suspect 2.10.x will be available at some point.

I get mine direct from http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releas ... onkey2.10/. Works fine. End of story.

I know this is an old post but I had a really difficult time finding the deb for seamonkey. I just installed it a month or so ago on mint 13. After upgrading to 15 none of the ppa's worked. I finally found the deb at http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/ubuntuzilla/all/main/base/seamonkey-mozilla-build

Hopes this helps!

<mod> Does it really make sense adding the hint to Nanotube's Ubuntuzilla repository after 8 years? Closing the thread. </mod>
