Lost output from built-in speakers

Post by PDXsailor »

I have been using Cinnamon 64 18.3 since last September. Today the sound no longer comes out of the built-in speakers, but does work with a USB headphone. The only thing updated today was xdg-utils; could this cause a problem, and if so how to revert? I have tried a number of recommendations from other threads to no avail. I have been using kernel 4.15.0-15 since released; -20 causes problems for polychromatic and nVidia config.

Hi PDXsailor.

Unfortunately, I don't know which things you've tried, so I'll try to cover a few and we'll go from there.

Have you made certain sound is not muted? That may come across as somewhat insulting, but it happens to pretty much everyone from time to time. I'd suggest running alsamixer in the terminal, press F6 to select the proper device, and make certain under the bar for Speaker you don't see MM. If you do, use arrow keys to highlight Speaker, then press your m key.

Now that the simplest is out of the way, have you deleted the files in ~/.config/pulse/ and rebooted? Something there might have become corrupted and will be regenerated after clearing/rebooting.

Have you installed pavucontrol and run it in the terminal? Made sure in Output Devices the Port is Speakers for the proper device?

Still nothing? Please paste back the results aplay -l and aplay -L and enclose the text in code tags (the "</>" button above the text entry box.)

Already done all of the above to no effect. (Thanks for the code tag - didn't know that).

Any result from aplay -D plughw:0,0 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav and have you tried sudo alsa force-reload yet?

No result from the aplay command.

The force reload had no apparent effect.

Any more ideas?

Re: Lost output from built-in speakers

Well, my main idea is to make your sink not say:

Code: Select all

	state: SUSPENDED
	suspend cause: IDLE
Then I'm pretty sure your sound would be working again. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to do that yet (reliably.) Anything I suggest at this point is total guessing based on whatever I find on the web.

If cat /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save returns something other than 0, we might have a candidate.

If cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1f.3/power/control returns something other than on, there's another possibility.

Those return values are what my system shows, so I'm assuming they're what you'd want, but I could be wrong on that. I also wouldn't know how to change them even if we knew they were the culprit.

Most of my searching on this turns up stuff we've already tried. This last suggestion I'm grabbing from a recent post I made that did NOT help in that case, but it may help in your case:
MrEen wrote: Fri May 18, 2018 3:21 pm I'm taking a bit of a guess here, but let's try this (it's easy to revert if necessary.)

Type gksudo xed /etc/pulse/default.pa (substitute xed with your preferred text editor.)

About 3/4 of the way down, find this section:

Code: Select all

### Automatically suspend sinks/sources that become idle for too long
load-module module-suspend-on-idle
Comment out the second line so it looks like this:

Code: Select all

### Automatically suspend sinks/sources that become idle for too long
#load-module module-suspend-on-idle
Save the file, then back in the terminal type killall pulseaudio followed by pulseaudio --start

Good luck.

No surprise that the mod to the /etc/pulse/default.pa didn't fix it. Reverting...

So you're saying it shows running when no sound? This is getting weirder.

I just spotted something... give me some time to investigate.

Yes, it shows as running but nothing comes out of the speakers. As I said in the OP xdg-utils was updated about the time this broke, and I am still wondering if that could have broken the sound.

I'm pretty sure (could always be wrong) that update didn't cause this, but I have something new to try that I think might work. Just be a few minutes to get it right before I post.

Okay, try this:

In the terminal, paste in sudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (substitute xed with your preferred text editor)

At the bottom of the file, add this

Code: Select all

options snd_hda_intel: model=laptop-dmic
Save the file, then reboot.

Good luck!

No joy. Reverting.

I also tried reverting to the earlier xdg-utils, to no avail. Re-installed current version. Maybe one of its dependencies? Probably a dead end as you suspected.

This really sucks. It would make a tiny bit more sense to me if you had never had speakers working.

One thing I'd like to mention is your audio info from inxi shows snd_hda_intel bus-ID: 00:1f.3 and while I haven't counted, I'd bet close to half the people that I've seen with audio problems had this same bus-ID. And more than a few never got it sorted properly.

One potential bright spot is Linux Mint 19 is just around the corner, and with any luck, this issue will disappear once that is installed.

I have some suggestions that we haven't tried yet, but it's up to you if you want to try them:
  • Try an earlier kernel and see if sound returns. You have a very modern system, so something else may stop working going this route
  • Try booting from the live CD/USB and see if sound works there
  • If the live version works, consider running the Alsa Info Script both there and the installed system and compare differences
  • Consider Upgrading Alsa although last I checked you'd need to be running a 4.4 series kernel to get that to work initially
Whichever way you choose to proceed, good luck!

Oops, one more. Not sure which option would have applied to you, so:

In the terminal, paste in sudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (substitute xed with your preferred text editor)

At the bottom of the file, add this

Code: Select all

options snd_hda_intel: model=laptop-amic
Save the file, then reboot.
Locked

Return to “Sound”
