No sound on my s/pdif output

Post by uvlt » Wed Dec 05, 2018 12:22 pm

Hallo!

I'm using my LM 19 also as a HTPC via xbmc and it's running fine through the years. I'm using a pas-through connection with s/pdif coaxial cable to my amplifier.
Two or three days ago, as i wanted to watch a movie, i just realized that there was no more sound-signal to my amplifier. The output seems to work ok when i check it with "pavucontrol", but there is nothing to hear on my amp (the indicator screen on it shows not to receive a signal from my pc).
The sound card works ok, as i booted from a live cd and the sound was ok through s/pdif to amp.
When i check it with "alsamixer", the s/pdif seems to be unmuted but i cannot change the level, that is on 00...

Any ideas?

Try deleting the files in ~/.config/pulse then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal.

Let's see the output of running pacmd list-sinks in the terminal while sound is trying to play please.

I also have similar issue using CB Omni 5.1 USB, no sound when trying to use the optical output.

This is a bit above my head, but I'll give it my best. There's a few things we can check here. The most important is does running lsmod | grep snd in the terminal return amongst other things snd_oxygen? I'm thinking the virtuoso driver should be pointing to or from snd_oxygen in the returned list.

Also, install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) and see if there're other options on the Configuration tab that give the expected output. This will be the Profile that shows Digital Stereo (IEC958) that I want you to try changing. While in pavucontrol, also look at the Output Devices tab with each change on the Configuration tab to ensure the outputs are making sense to you (sorry I can't explain this better.) Right now, the Output Devices tab will show something like Digital Output (S/PDIF). An example of something that might be helpful: If the Configuration tab has Digital Stereo (IEC958) and Digital Stereo (IEC958) 2 and Digital Stereo (IEC958) 3 etc. try the others.

I hope that helps. If not, I'll try to find other things to check.

I have pavucontrol already installed, and in configuration tab "digital stereo IEC958" profile selected. In output devices digital, output s/pdif is selected... :? Maybe i'll have to wait for new mint 19.1, for a new installation?

Let's see the output of pacmd list-cards? With this I'll be able to see the other options on the Configuration tab of pavucontrol that might help find a way to get this working.

I see 2 other configs with Digital Stereo available to choose from. Yours is the first line:

Code: Select all

output:iec958-stereo+input:analog-stereo: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo Input (priority 5560, available: unknown)
output:iec958-stereo+input:iec958-stereo: Digital Stereo Duplex (IEC958) (priority 5555, available: unknown)
On the Configuration tab click on Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output and change it to Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo Input then test your sound.

If that doesn't work, change it again, this time to Digital Stereo Duplex (IEC958) then test the sound again.

Hopefully one of those options will work.

Unfortunatelly, it didn't solve the problem...

As i have recently some other problems like not beeing able to change my default monitor (something about xrandr error) and some other problems with my auto mounted disks, maybe is a good time to refresh with the new mint version...
Thanks a lot about your time!

Sorry uvlt, I thought I had already replied to your last post.

I'm sorry you're have more issues with your system, and maybe they are all related. If you haven't yet done a new install, you could check for permissions issues with find $HOME ! -user $USER. If that returns a bunch of stuff, it can be fixed with sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /home/$USER.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck!
