Can't play Facebook videos

Post by clerik007 » Wed Jan 09, 2019 9:58 pm

My Toshiba laptop, running LM 18.3, won't play videos, even when I am plugged in via my ethernet cable. Is there something I need to do to make this work?

What browser? On my netbook running 17.3 I use either Chrome, which plays FB videos fine, or Vivaldi, which is chromium based and doesn't. Chromium is NOT just a FOSS version of Chrome, it just doesn't have the same functionality. Haven't used Firefox in a while so I can't comment there.

apt install chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra answer yes to remove chromium-codecs-ffmpeg afterwards for slimjet it seems you need to do sudo cp /usr/lib/chromium-browser/libffmpeg.so /opt/slimjet/ but most other chromium browsers will just need chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra not sure why mint doesn't include it

Because they're proprietary and Mint has adopted the policy of most Linux distros since Mint 18 and no longer includes proprietary software. Some seem to have thought that the main reason to install Mint was that they were included but that always sounded mighty dumb to me.

And, if you have to install all this, which BTW completely ruins chromium as a truly FOSS browser to the provacy obsessed, as any useable browser must , what's the point of using chromium (unless you have 32 bit hardware) anyway??? If you have 64 bit hardware you may as well save yourself the trouble and just install Chjrome anyway.

nvidia is also proprietary but quite a lot of users use proprietary drivers. you right, what's the point of using a FOSS browser if you can't play facebook videos.
