Connecting MIDI keyboard to lmms question

Post by arcenciel » Sun Oct 20, 2019 11:37 pm

Hi,
Thanks for reading this.
I have a working implementation of LMMS version 1.20 running on Mint 19.2 and it works perfectly for playback on my speakers. Now I want to connect my MIDI keyboard, which is a NEKTAR Impact G49.
The keyboard lights up fine when plugged into the USB and I get an aconnect -l as follows:

Code: Select all

dave@dave-MS-7A34:~/Downloads$ aconnect -i
client 0: 'System' [type=kernel]
    0 'Timer '
    1 'Announce '
client 14: 'Midi Through' [type=kernel]
    0 'Midi Through Port-0'
client 24: 'Impact GX49' [type=kernel,card=2]
    0 'Impact GX49 MIDI 1'
    1 'Impact GX49 MIDI 2'
My lsusb shows this:

Code: Select all

dave@dave-MS-7A34:~/Downloads$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:c019 Logitech, Inc. Optical Tilt Wheel Mouse
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 04d9:1605 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 2467:2033
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0a2b Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
I assume the keyboard is the unnamed device id:2467:2033

However lmms does not seem to see it in the MIDI menu.
I have seen tutorials that seem to show an icon that let's me pick from a list of supported keyboards, but this version of LMMS 1,2 does not seem to be the same.
Is there a setting that I need to turn on to activate MIDI input?
my /dev/midi2 is empty.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry,
I forgot to add the log file:

Code: Select all

dave@dave-MS-7A34:~/Downloads$ ./lmms-1.2.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage
Carla does not appear to be installed. That's OK, please ignore any related library errors.
Jack appears to be installed on this system, so we'll use it.

Couldn't create MIDI-client, neither with ALSA nor with OSS. Will use dummy-MIDI-client.

Hi arcenciel.

Yes, the Bus 001 Device 005: ID 2467:2033 output is the NEKTAR device.

I used LMMS for 2 days about a year and a half ago. I have completely forgotten anything I may have learned. It's possible you need to select something in Instrument plugins that will then use the MIDI keyboard.

The only pages I bookmarked back then, which might be of some help are these:

https://lmms.io/documentation/

https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=Using_MIDI

Hope that helps.
