No sound on TV through HDMi cable and Display port adapter

Post by Micik »

Hello Linux Mint guys,
this is a question from newbie that has recently came from Windows 10 pro to Linux Mint Ulyana 20.
I have installed Mint on HP mini PC that previously had win 10 pro. This PC had Display port output and I use TV instead of monitor. In the DP port is inserted DP/HDMi adapter and from that HDMI cable to the TV. Everything worked fine on windows 10 pro, so this is just question about Linux Mint settings.
info.
This is my configuration:

Code: Select all

https://termbin.com/1nme
I have already searched this forum about problems on HDMi no sound since this seems to be a common issue.
My relevant sound info is here:

Code: Select all

https://termbin.com/akmd
Output of lsmod | grep hdmi is the following:

Code: Select all

$ lsmod | grep hdmi
snd_hda_codec_hdmi 61440 1
snd_hda_codec 135168 5 snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_soc_hdac_hda
snd_hda_core 90112 9 snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_ext_core,snd_hda_codec,snd_sof_intel_hda_common,snd_soc_hdac_hda,snd_sof_intel_hda
snd_pcm 106496 10 snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_sof,snd_sof_intel_hda_common,snd_soc_core,snd_hda_core,snd_pcm_dmaengine
snd 90112 22 snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_seq,snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hwdep,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_timer,snd_compress,snd_soc_core,snd_pcm,snd_rawmidi
As you guess, there is no sound on TV and it is not possible to choose output device in Pulse Audio Volume Control. There is sound on the small built in speaker in the HP mini PC.

Hi Micik, and welcome to the forum.

While ALSA "sees" an HDMI device, it isn't getting recognized properly. PulseAudio isn't seeing it at all. I would suggest checking your BIOS to see if you can toggle the HDMI audio off for one boot, then back on again for the next boot.

Hello MrEn,

I turned off Audio in BIOS, reboot the machine, saw there is no sound and then went back and turn on AUDIO in BIOS. Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem.
I'll try with another distro of Linux Mint to see if the problem still exists.

In the meantime, I tried with Ubuntu 20.4 Live DVD and the behaviour is the same.
Since cable is HDMI connected to the HDMI port on TV and on the PC is connected via adapter to display port, I'm not sure if this is Linux problem no sound via display port or via HDMI.

I wonder if the modesetting video driver is causing this. I would now suggest trying the Intel driver if you haven't already.

Thank you Mreen. I tried ubuntu live and mint 19 xfce live and the issue is the same. I had to accept the fact that my hardware is simply not supported in Linux, so I moved back to win 10. Since I still want to gather some experience in Linux, I’ll see if I can install it on my laptop.
Thank you for your time and effort.

No worries, Micik.

One thing I hadn't gotten to yet is the kernel. As you have what looks to be a newer machine, the 5.11 kernel may have helped fixed this.

Hello,

before definitely giving up, I decided to try one more approach.

I have found almost the same HP mini PC and install Linux Mint 20.2 and on this PC HDMI output is working. The sound is loud and clear on my TV/ There is a HW difference between these two mini PCs, the working PC has i3 CPU, 4 GB RAM and additional VGA output (in addition to DP). It worked on this PC immediately after installing Mint, I didn't have to do anything. HP mini on which HDMI sound output is not working has serial port instead on VGA (module cars) and i5 CPU. Couldn't find any difference in BIOS that could explain this.
So, Can you please examine the info from working one and help me understand why is not working on my PC?
Here is the info:

Re: No sound on TV through HDMi cable and Display port adapter

Post by Micik »

I know exactly what is the problem. I have compared the two PCs and found out that PC on which sound is not working has the most up to date BIOS. I tried to downgrade it, but couldn't. I got message that downgrade is not possible due to system policies.

Out of curiosity, I turned on the working PC, entered Windows 10 and by using HP Support Assistant software, I have updated system firmware (which includes BIOS update) and voila, after restart into Mint, sound doesn't work anymore.
The catch is that downgrade is not possible even though there is an option to restrict BIOS rollback to previous versions and this option is NOT selected.
I have tried many things included BIOS update from local USB device, Win key +B recovery and many other things, but downgrade is not possible.

So now there are two PCs with no HDMI sound in Linux Mint (in Win 10 work OK), but at least I have found out why.

Now, all I can do is to wait for another BIOS revision and hope it will solve the problem.

Thank you for your help. The cause is found but problem is not solved.
At least win10 works OK on both PCs.

Just curious but do computers no longer use BIOS batteries?

They do use CR2032 battery. At least HP Mini Prodesk 400 G4 use this battery.
