Digitizing VHS tapes on Mint

I want to put a VHS tape on my computer, an old game Doorways to Horror, but I'm hitting a few brick walls. Aparently this was easily done a few years ago but no none of the instructions work. I have an old Plextor PX-TV402u that still works but I can't compile the drivers for it. I wouldn't mind buying a new video capture device if I had to, they're only $30 or less, so that isn't the issue, I just want to know which ones work and if anyone has done it lately.
