USB Sound Card 'crackly' on Mint 13 - Crossover SOLVED {ish}

Post by g0lrk »

Brief bit of info - I use Crossover and an external USB interface/soundcard to connect up to my Amateur Radio equipment and use the ONLY windows program that is any good and that isn't replicated to any degree on Linux http://hamsoft.ca/pages/mmsstv.php

Using Mint 9 same equipment as I have been using for a few years no problem at all with the sound through Crossover, (various versions up to the latest 31.1.1-i386 downloaded 31/Oct 2012 & tried also on Mint 9 and working 100%).

Using Mint 13 Maya same equipment there is a crackle all the way through the picture sent which makes the received picture very difficult to see, and the other people can hear the crackles and pops over the tones from the sstv being sent.

I have re-tried ALL my equipment on a backup version of Mint 9 that included Crossover and updated that to this latest version to confirm that it isn't that causing it - it isn't. So any help greatly appreciated please.

Thank-you.

Kevin.

Re: USB Sound Card 'crackly' on Mint 13 - through Crossover

Post by g0lrk »

Posted same question on the Crossover Forum and got an answer on there.

See here http://www.codeweavers.com/support/tick ... tatus]=ASC

Basically it boils down to...

Here's a quote from Jack Phinney Crossover Staff Member...........
There's currently quite a bit of work being done on Crossover/Wine's sound back-end, and as a result Crossover 11's treatment of sound has been "in flux" (because the work is ongoing). It should be much more stable for Crossover 12, so our official advice is to wait until the release of Crossover 12 and see what the difference is, there (if any).

The fact that the sound broke for the Mint 13 update certainly implies that something about their PulseAudio implementation is the culprit, and this is largely what our back-end sound work is being designed to fix, i.e. smoother integration with Pulseaudio. At present we have to go through ALSA compatibility plugins like 32-bit libasound2-plugins, so if nothing else it's a good idea to make sure you have that 32-bit libasound2-plugins library installed.
Cheers.

Kevin.
