I've downloaded a lot of music videos.

Some play on Banshee...

None of them play on Movie Player... --> The Default Player ---> doesn't even play the sound!

others play on Gnome Mplayer... Sometimes I get sound and no picture, and other times I get picture and no sounds.

They seem to all play on VLC..

1. Why all the Media players?
2. How do I make VLC my default media player

Freedom, I might suppose.
2. How do I make VLC my default media player
Right click the video file and choose Properties.
On the 'Open With' tab, click 'VLC media player' then click 'Set as default'.

You'll need to do that for each file type you want to start with VLC.

I've a better idea,
go to system settings>file associations and assign vlc as the default media player by going through the list of extensions... this is much quicker than what mr. CATWEASEL suggests

Go to Menu at the left bottom corner, then go to System tools ---> system settings ---> then you will see system at the bottom click "Details" logo then go to Default applications, there you can change Default Web, Music, Video, Mail, Photos
