Sound stopped working

Post by AndyShissler »

One day I powered up my Linux and the sound stopped working. No login chime. No music with Banshee. According to the sound settings, mute is off & volume levels are mid-range or higher. I'm running Linux Mint 14 Nadia with Xfce. BTW, the sound works fine when I boot to WinXP (dual boot), so I know the sound card works.

Here's some helpful info:

In response to another thread, I tried this, with no effect:

sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` libasound2

I've rebooted several times. Any ideas? What are my next steps?

Thanks!

Updating: I needed to reboot. Sound and settings okay now. Sorry.

--------------

I would like to hear advice, too. Sound worked fine yesterday on LM 15 RC Cinnamon. Today no sound. In settings it says: Output, play sound through: "Dummy Output." Volume controls are "On." I haven't seen this "Dummy Output" ever before. Thank you.

I had the same "Dummy Output" problem as you mention in LM RC 15 Cinnamon.
This can be solved by adding a kernel parameter to the GRUB configuration as mentioned in this post:

http://www.mysamplecode.com/2012/05/no- ... nt-12.html

I guess this should be a bug because according to the kernel parameter documentation:

https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio ... meters.txt

this option is enabled by default and shouldn't be used for recent BIOSes.

I wonder if I corrupted the sound on Mint 15. aplay shows the sound cards but Settings->Sound is completely blank. I also disabled auto-mute in alsamixer and rebooted, but get nothing. I was actually trying to get the *recording* function to work (nothing would work), when suddenly I had no output at all. I installed/uninstalled several music apps in the process. Any ideas?

Search for Piggy's reply to a post here on the forums, great advice. Simple command line fix:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base
Might be all you need. If not, you can do the Purge PulseAudio, and install Alsa fix, right above that in that post: "No more sound Post...by walrus_t" topic 196&t=99858

Well, I think I corrupted something. That didn't work either. The instructions to remove PulseAudio returned errors. aplay -l shows:

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: HD [USB Sound Blaster HD], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: HD [USB Sound Blaster HD], device 1: USB Audio [USB Audio #1]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: HD [USB Sound Blaster HD], device 2: USB Audio [USB Audio #2]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

But the Sound setting is simply blank/empty, and no sound with VLC or anything else.

Thank you. Was running into the same issue and this solved it for me.

Yesterday I installed LM15 Cinnamon on my NEW HP2000 laptop.
It is 3-boot install with Win8 and Ubuntu Secure 12.10.
Sound worked yesterday --- but not today.
Got the "Dummy Output" bug.

Read the above suggestions.
But since I'm not a grub2 expert,
I couldn't follow the suggestions to solution.
I would appreciate some KISS hand holding.
Thanks in advance.

Well --- Sound is back today.
Who would have thunk??
I don't know why. It just is.
Boot several times today
and it is back every time.
Yesterday a Bad-hair day maybe?

BTW sound worked fine every time on Win8 Hell
& on Ubuntu the dog, dispite all its fleas.
Go figure!!!!

This is getting to be a real embarrassment for mint, I've seen a lot of people complain about sound problems and there is never much assistance from the development team. It's like it's been placed in the "too hard basket" and then been ignored. To be expected to read endless pages of dead ends to get the bottom of the problem is a real PITA especially for something that really should work out of the box.

I know 4 people who've bailed out of mint because of sound problems in the last 12 months, they'll probably never return.

My sound doesn't work most of the time either, on rare occasions it will work for some unknown reason. There's no problem on windows or suse so there seems to be something going on with mint.

Here's a few of my details

I only get this problem when I boot with headphones plugged in. If I boot normally it goes away, and then I can plugin my headphones.
