No sound control - Mint 15

Postby kar288 » Sat Sep 21, 2013 6:50 pm

I just upgraded from mint 12 to mint 15 and I have audio but have no way to control it other than the alsamixer. I have cinnamon 1.8.6 and there is no volume icon on my panel even though it says that I have the Cinnamon sound applet active. All the sound controls are also inactive in the sound settings:
so I am guessing that cinnamon is not finding the proper sound hardware. Alsa mixer says that I have: Card: HDA Intel MID, Chip: Realtek ALC269

Does anyone know how to fix this?

the first step is to find out what audio devices you have installed

from terminal run the lspci command on Audio devices as shown in the following example:

Code: Select all

 ~ $ lspci |grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)
01:05.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4200 Series]
bill@ALBERT4 ~ $

if that comes up empty then Linux isn't finding your audio device

try this one then:

Code: Select all

 ~ $ sudo lshw -C sound
[sudo] password
       description: Audio device
product: RS880 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4200 Series]
vendor: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI
       physical id: 5.1
       bus info: pci@0000:01:05.1
       version: 00
       width: 32 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: pm msi bus_master cap_list
       configuration: driver=snd_hda_intel latency=0
       resources: irq:19 memory:fe9e8000-fe9ebfff
       description: Audio device
       product: SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
vendor: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI
       physical id: 14.2
       bus info: pci@0000:00:14.2
       version: 40
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list
       configuration: driver=snd_hda_intel latency=64
       resources: irq:16 memory:fe7f8000-fe7fbfff
 ~ $

you will probably get more detailed information on the same devices reported by lspci -- but -- it might find an audio device that is not pci supported
let us know what results...
